Your picture’s reminded of a time I was fishing the John Day river in Oregon. A snake about that size was swimming down the river and right when that sucker got in front of me it decided to come ashore. Needless to say I put my fishing efforts on hold and began flailing the end of my fishing rod at the attacker. The snake decided that I was unfriendly and continued its journey downstream. My fishing buddy witnessed the encounter and thought I was crazy until the snake ended up in front of him. Good times.

I hear you can tell a venomous snake by their eyes they’re elliptical or cat like pupils so you have to get down close and look them eye to eye.

I don't like getting that close LOL - and it's not always true either.
    I identify by color/pattern.

Another good way tho is the underside - after the poop-shoot if the scales 'split' then it's harmless.
If they remain 'straight' then it's venomous.
    Except with the Coral Snake.

So after the snek bites you, you grab it, turn it over, and learn if you are going to die?

Yes ... I will break out my "snake translater" app on my phone, get right up next to the head, and ask it many questions. Sounds like a plan. o_O:eek:

That's like wiping before you poop. Doesn't make sense at all.

    Geebus.

Its always the same with 'snake people' - "Awww hims just a friendly snek! No danger noodle! See, look at the eyes, the pupils are perfectly round, now if the pupils are oval by as much as a half a millimeter, that would be the 'Western-venomous, poison, hydrochloric-acid spitting, guaranteed death over three days of pain rocky-yellow-oval-diamond-bellied snake'! ha ha ha, you wouldn't want to be near THAT one!!!"

My sibling in science. I am not going to get close enough to measure your little buddies eyeballs with a caliper. I'm not going to kill it either, unless I have no other option. I do not have inventory slots for every different version of snake. When I see one of them on the trail, my brain stops functioning - all your mnemonics jumble together - 'red and yellow, let it mellow? Red touches brown, flush it down?' I'm going to levitate and exit the area at great haste, unless there are women and children present, in which case I _may_ be able to hold it together long enough to get them away from the nope rope. Yes snakes fill a valuable niche in the environment, I would very much prefer that we not share physical space, thank you very much. You are welcome to laugh at me (from a rapidly increasing distance) while you get up close and personal to classify this particular snake and identify (hopefully correctly for you - I don't care) if this one is harmless, painful, or deadly.

"Most rattlesnake bites do not kill" "Adult rattlesnakes sometimes give dry-bites" "Red on black you are OK Jack" ... Rattlesnake anti-venon applications cost $60k-$100k, even if there was no venom originally.

While some of the people I know are snakes, even they have few indicators of venomous/non-venomous.

that particular rhyme meant to identify a coral snake is inaccurate. Don't use that as an ID tool.

    No it's accurate.
    Red on Black: venom lack
    Red on Yellow: dead fellow

    Scarlet KingSnake: no venom
    upload_2025-7-10_20-55-14.png

Coral Snake: neurotoxic venom ( like a Cobra )
    upload_2025-7-10_20-54-22.png

Exceptions are other locations - like in South America, some of these coral snakes mimic our Scarlet Kings....
So if you are in the jungles of south america throw the rule book out the window.

You don't wanna mess with Coral Snakes. They don't have retractable fangs, but rather grooves in their front teeth that drip
venom into the wound. They are small and you might not even feel it or realize you've been bit until a half hour later when you
practically literally drop dead. Neurotoxic venom is not something to be trifled with. I understand it's a pleasant way to exit the
world tho, rather serene, not painful per-se... you just die.
