Hi guys. New here and had an unfortunate event happen today, Driving home, doing maybe 15-20mph, I got ran off the road by a guy in my lane. He sped off after but it caused me to go off a stone wall, wheel slightly turned, not full crank. Hitting a fire hydrant driver side axle as well. I would've gotten better pictures but Im on crutches recovering from a broken leg...Then this happened. Tried reversing, no good. Tried 4L. Wouldn't engage. Wheel also wouldn't budge. Could this be a snapped CV axle? Bad tie rod or both? other side is fine. Not much of a mechanic at all, welding is my specialty. Driver side as you can see, wheel folded in. Looking for recommendations too for after market axles or whatever since I hear this can be a common issue with the Tacomas especially lifted ones like mine. Has a 3 inch icon suspension lift, 33 inch tires. Luckily Geico is covering the repairs but I may be interested in higher quality ones than the Toyota dealership will give me. I live in Hawaii and rust is an issue, also was told by a mechanic I may need a new axle in the future awhile ago...Oops should've listened maybe. I know it's hard to tell but what do you think happened? And what after market parts would you recommend for a stronger build? Thanks in advance and hope this is the right place for this post. This has been my dream truck since I've been a child and it pains me to see this! Glad it wasn't worse and Im ok especially with my leg already broken...left one so not my driving one. Thanks again in advance for the help/input

    Welcome aboard :hattip:

Let insurance cover it and no need to upgrade your cv axles, you want them to snap instead of your diff in a case like this.

Cool. Glad it happened where it did. We have a lot of crazy terrain Big Island to get to remote beaches with no service...That would've been a nightmare.

Do any of the wheels spin? You say no 4L. No reverse. If it won’t move I’m thinking transfer case or transmission. Could be electrical control issue. Good luck.

Wheels spin. Just wasn't able to move since drivers side wheel folded in. Did hear a bang when it happened.

    Welcome aboard!

Wow...sorry to see that, and glad no one was hurt. Also glad to hear Geico is taking care of it. Don't mention your mechanic's opinion about a new axle...that won't get any bonus points with the adjuster.

Did you get the license plate of the other vehicle? I don't know about Hawaii, but hit-and-run is a felony in many states. You might want to invest in a dashcam after this incident.

Impossible to tell without directly inspecting the wheel assembly, but I bet your wheel hub broke away from the CV. If the wheels still spin, then your transaxle is ok.

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
Bent/Broken inner and outer tie rod, sheared/bent alignment tabs, bent lower control arm, CV is probably fine with the exception of a torn boot. These are all conjecture from previous damage repair when impacting guard rails and other road debris, stone or barriers with just inside the wheel but outside the frame.

Let insurance take care of it if you have it or a mechanic if you cannot perform the work yourself.
