That's my approach. I've been doing vehicle recovery stuff since before I could drive, so I've learned a few things in the last 30 years.

I certainly don't have that kind of experience, but I have watched a youtube video or two, and I stayed at a Holiday Inn once. :D

    Oof

    Good announcement OP

Know when to use a snatch strap, and when to use a tow strap.

    20191224_105630_2.jpg

ARB snatch strap used to "yank" a truck forward as it had no traction and rolled down a steep dirt incline and almost flipped.

You guys ever watch Matt's Off Road Recovery on YouTube? I can't stop watching, it's a great channel. 99% of the time he uses kinetic ropes to recover the vehicle. Doesn't even have a winch on his truck. His rope of choice is the 30' Yankum Python https://yankum.com/python.

This has been my favorite Youtube channel for the last couple of weeks. Some of those recoveries are pretty incredible for that little Jeep with no winch.

I made my own tow straps. I don't recommend this if you don't have the appropriate webbing as well as a machine that can handle the thickness of the webbing doubled and appropriate thread. I gave some to buddies and stressed that it was a tow strap and not a kinetic strap.Still they've used them in some surprising recoveries.

    No one uses bridles?

And some of them seem unnecessarily dangerous, too.

I've seen him do several dynamic recoveries with just those tow truck driver hooks. That just seem insane to me.

It's unfathomable to me that he doesn't have a winch.

Ditto, dont understand someof his methods myslef, a winch expensive as it is would have saved him some valuable time in many situations.

That's just it, they aren't all that expensive! With how much off-road tows cost, he'd pay for it in like 1 or 2 extractions.

I am taking into account that he would probably run a steel cable, and to keep the tools on hand for a trail repair, not to mention replacing the cable on a regular basis due to constant use (he would use it WAY more than you or I would). a 12k winch runs anywhere from $500-3k depending on what grade, and manufacturer you go with...

Yeah, an offroad tow can cost you $500 or more. This isn't AAA, lol.

I don't think you have to replace a steel line as often as you think. Synth lines, yeah, those wear out pretty fast and even just break down in the sun. Tow truck drivers use their flatbed winches probably dozens of times a day, and I doubt they replace them very often.

But if you're worried about the cost of replacing a $100 steel line for your winch, you' probably in the wrong business, lol.

depends on if it's a steel cable or synth. Are your D rings color coded with your bumper and max trax mounts? You're not just running the factory hook are you? Factor 55 is a minimum.

    Awe..steel cable.

D rings are black, but so is my bumper so they match. Maxtrax are that dark grey that almost look black...and no factory hook since I've got the ARB up front.

My snatch strap is orange tho; totally clashes with the black and white panda theme I got going. I need a cool username for Instagram too
