What snatch strap and shackle should I get. Not sure what to take in to account as far as rating, or what brands are recommended/gold standard

The bigger one. It doesn't hurt to go bigger, but it can DEFINITELY hurt if you go smaller...

I used to have a 20k strap, but now I've got a 3" wide 30k# one. This is for my ~5k pound truck.

As far as brands go, just don't get the chinese no-name ones from Amazon. Warn is probably the gold standard, but their 3/4" ones can cost like $40 a piece. I wouldn't have heartburn over smittybilt or the rhino ones, either.

Get the biggest size D-ring shackles that will fit in your recovery points if you have an aftermarket bumper. I think most have 3/4" holes...

Stay away from the $6 hardware store shackles. A drop forged shackle will ran me ~$21, it is rated at something like 62,000 lbs

Just remember that with this kind of stuff, your life could very well depend on this equipment. I wouldn't say go out and get the most expensive widget, because the price doesn't always equate to the most durable. Just don't get the cheap stuff.

Look up “ASR Offroad”. They have a good price on “green pin” shackles; $15. I also bought a snatch rope from them via a group buy.

This is poor advice in regards to buying the biggest snatch strap. For a snatch strap to work properly, you need it to stretch. You’re not going to achieve that with a little 5000 lb truck and a 30,000 lb strap and you can potentially break stuff. I recommend the the arb 17,500 strap.

Yes bigger is not better when it comes to snatch straps! You need to take advantage of the kinetic energy that the "elastic" snatch straps provide. If you go too big the strap will not stretch and snap back. Most people recommend going 2 - 3 x the weight of your truck.

I second this info. Too big of a strap can hurt. This arb is what I have and it had served me well
