Fantastic question. When I had originally got the JDM 5VZ before this 2JZ, I don't recall exactly what it was but there was something regarding all the pulleys on the accessories and the water pump. Something along those lines was all different because the water pump was different. I'm having a blank moment right now trying to recall it exactly. I definitely remember something different about all that. The throttle body was different as well. The bolt pattern to all that stuff was totally interchangeable with the US parts here on the old motor which was great.

That being said, it entirely depends on the exact motor itself which different parts will change over from Japanese spec to US specific.

Great info! Would the emissions certification process give you any trouble since it's the same motor?

You shouldn't have any problems at all given that everything is successful swapped over. Remember, it's the exact same block. It's just the smog related stuff you technically have to switch over.

Now that I think of it the oil filter was in a different spot but on the same side of the block oddly enough.

So something like changing the oil filter location, or water pump, or anything like that has no effect on smog. It's stuff that air, fuel, and exhaust flow through that is smog cert dependent. Hence throttle US spec body.

I'm sorry for my lack of knowledge on the smog stuff though. I wish I knew some more details. I'll certainly be finding out a whole lot more soon...

Don't worry about it, you know plenty about it! I'm just concerned because of how strict California is when it comes to SMOG and emissions. I'm thinking of doing a swap myself one day. Thanks!

When I was trying to bar my BMW swap, the bottom line was that any emissions system from the donor car had to be put into the swapped car.
For example, the motor I had was a from a 1995. That motor was configured with 2 cats.
In 1996 models the motor was "slightly modified by bmw" and used a 1 catalytic converted configuration. Some people would try to run 1 cat on the 95 and fail.
The converted car must run exactly what the donor car had.
Another example of that is not using the proper charcoal canister. The canister of the receiver car looked similar to that of the donor. Once again, some people would ignore that and get popped for not running the donor charcoal can.
Some people just try to cut corner or just ignore basic stuff.
As long as there are no aftermarket parts and all emissions stuff has been transferred it shouldn't be hard to pass.

Thank for sharing. Certainly motivating to get this done! Definitely made me think a bit deeper into it, such as airbox, maf, and charcoal canister.

It's interesting you mention how touchy the reffs are regarding the year of items used. Definitely something I will keep in mind. At first what I had in mind was finding parts the same year or newer via eBay or Craigslist. But it look like finding a donor car would be best.

Things that were done: spark plugs, oil change, water pump front half, camshaft seals, crank seal, vvti gear rebuild, vvti actuator cleaned, timing belt, timing belt tension pulley, hydraulic tensioner, 6" main pulley to 5-3/8" pulley for upcoming power steering pump and throttle body cleaning.

Truck ran fine before despite how dirty the throttle body was and still runs good now. Good piece of mind now that I know where everything sits on major maintenance.

Definitely looking forward to moving battery to passenger side, Digital Dakota temperature gauge and fan controller, which will be shortly followed by new power steering system.

Hey everyone. So I've been doing some thinking. Power steering pump is on top of the to do list, but I'm also going so start searching for any gs300's being parted out so I can start the process of the USDM swap and get this truck fully legal. Will keep you all posted.

Yup! Was in that race. I'm an okay rider, but still very new to dirt biking in general. I had broken my front brake lever the first lap of four. I could only just cruise the track at that point and got to enjoy more of the scenery. It was beautiful out there. Nice change from the desert.

    We should go riding sometime!

I was there at the end of the race on my yz250 looking for someone with zip ties cause my seat fell off,

Let's go out this weekend?! I might possibly have a wedding to go to but that's still up in the air if I can get someone to watch my dog, but if I don't go I'm goi to lake piru to ride my ski and then either rowler flats or jawbone I have to hit this weekend,

This past weekend I road the flats Friday after noon and Saturday I hit Gorman hard all day my new back tire is toast

Man it's too bad you didn't see me there!! I carry a ridiculous amount of zip ties, Gorilla tape, and quicksteel. Life's necessities haha!

Remember a while back how I mentioned that I had some weird clutch issues (push rod melting...) on my WR gear swapped 88' YZ250? Got all the bugs worked out on it. Bike is just ridiculous on power. I had built it too much for me in all honesty. Suspension sucks though. But other than that the bike is badass. Will be selling it soon because it's just too much. Picture is at Cleghorn.

My girlfriend had got me an 08' YZ450 which is the one I'm racing now. It came from a very close friend. It was an awesome birthday/"anniversary"/christmas gift. The bike has the suspension valved softer for the desert, Rekluse clutch, full Dubach exhaust, desert tank, etc. It's my dream bike.

I'll PM you my new number by the way. Shoot me a text because I haven't finished transferring all my contacts over yet. My other phone is toast.

Guys I'm in need of some help. There is suddenly a speed related knocking sound in the drive train of the truck. Sounds like either driveshaft near output flange of transmission or front passenger side hub.

Put all four in the air. There is no noticeable play in any of the hubs or tie/control/connecting rods or shocks.

Ran it with the rear in the air and no sounds. Sounds like it might possibly be the drive shaft at the transmission. Maybe that bearing is going out at the output shaft? But I didn't hear anything with it sitting in the air putting load on it with throttle and brakes but still spinning. No noticeable play there at the output flange.

    Does not seem brake related.

Ever since I put the new tires on there has been this weird vibration/rubbing sound that would come from time to time like maybe a couple times a month. I looked a while back at the time to see if there was rubbing somewhere, but there wasn't any marks. I have a gut feeling those random buzzing/vibration sounds and this new knocking sound is possibly related....

Does anyone have any thoughts to share on this? I'm a little stumped with what else to check. Pretty frustrated too.

Edit - I should add that the knocking sounds is most pronounced around 15/20mph on smooth road.
