    LOL

    I am a scientist, actually...

Do you know where the "control" intake temp values came from (the "before" temps he was comparing to)? I'm assuming he was looking at his intake temps before he threw the snorkel on...

All you'd need to do is run some temp sensors along the inside of the snorkel, and compare them. Might even be able to use a laser temp gun. Or cover the black in a blanket or something. Or drive at night...

I know you don't really care, lol, but now you got me wondering. Like I kinda want to get a snorkel, now, if only just for this...

Heat is a motor's enemy. Engines operate better and much more efficiently on cooler air. You'll get more usable performance out of your engine, yes...assuming you are in fact pulling in cooler air. Most CAI's claim to do this but in reality they really don't. But that's another topic

Funny thing is that, iirc, the spec for these is so small that if you can detect ANY play, they're way out of spec.

It's like a 20 minute job - 4 bolts and a castle nut. When these things fail, they do so catastrophically. I'd go ahead and replace them.

With cooler air, yes, you get more power. Some, but not a lot. IMO, not enough to warrant getting a snorkel if more power your goal (turbos and SCs for that).

Although we have some unpublished research that @TACORIDER and I are discussing (not really, lol) that seems to suggest intake temps might actually be higher, but more research is necessary...

you don't need a snorkel unless you're chasing the "overland as f#uck" look. Just remember your ECU is located in the glove box area and its not wise to go through a deep pool of water.

I'm pretty sure your engine/ecu was off while submerge for those long hour, doubt it'll make a big difference. I like to see the inside after the ecu dries off.

Not bad looking.... you're the lucky one that got away... Look like minor corrosion and burnt spot?

Neighbor completely submerge his jeep when his trailer/boat took him under while launching with engine running. Engine stalled after getting dragged under. Long story short, his jeep would have power but no crank, until he swap the ecu. Fired up like a champ after that.

    'cause it was a jeep.

By brother ran into a puddle with his 86 4Runner FAR deeper than he thought. Water up to the bottom of the windshield.

After safely storing it in the puddle over a weekend, he got it towed out and back home Monday. He changed all the fluids and it started right up.

Granted, it was old technology, but it still had an ECU...

This one also works. There is a small gap but if its worth it for the price.

Here is my Hilux snorkel gap on my 2013. Maybe half of the width of a pinky finger or less of a gap..not terrible.

In Red River, NM I went through the Red River and had water over the hood for a second, I was pretty nervous (as was my wife) but had no issues to speak of. I know the intake was under the water line but behind the wall of water I was pushing. On the way back I decided to drive across the pedestrian walk/bridge for UTV's. Thank god 1st Gens are so narrow. I had 2" on either side with the mirrors folded in, and didn't want to cross the river again in that spot.

Side note: If you look in the air box on a 1st Gen, It looks well designed to keep water out of the engine even if a little gets in somehow. However there are no drain holes to let it out after your brief exposure to water. I wonder if drilling one small 1/4' hole in the bottom there would be a good idea. Or, would it allow water to possibly penetrate the air box faster during a brief crossing? Now, if you get stuck in water, it would seep in faster for sure and be nearer the intake as opposed to providing some sort of air gap to prevent this (Think holding a jar upside down in a tub). Anyone take a close look in their air box and think about that?

I know the theory is that on dusty roads when following someone the air your engine takes in is cleaner if you have a snorkel. Has anyone actually studied this? From casual observation it doesn’t look like that extra couple of feet of elevation would make any difference. It would be nice to have some scientifically collected data.
