I will be spending a lot of time in the Arkansas National Forests and there are numerous water crossings. What are some recommended snorkels that are best at keeping water out of the intake?

I’m very close to you. Do not get a snorkel for water crossings. Cavitation in the wheel well is what will help you.
That said, I went with dobinsons for a snorkel but not for water crossings but because I’m running no liners due to bigger tires. Easy install and could probably be water tight but would require sealing the airbox more.

Can you explain or have pictures of what you are recommending?

Are those things really meant for deep water crossings? I thought they were more a heavy dust thing.

The cavitation? It’s creating an air pocket in the front of the fender, like a wake off the front bumper and keeps the intake above water. I’ve crossed water that was over my hood that way in northern Arkansas. A snorkel is a false sense of security. Look at your air box, there is a drain in it for a reason.

I mean snorkel or not, i wouldnt recommend going deeper then bottom of your doors. Most guys are not even comfortable going past the hubs.

Just look how low the alternator sits and think about all the electronics in your truck. its not like its a 80 series diesel landcruiser.

I did this water crossing and it was very scary. I made it but never again will i go so deep again. I did not extend my diff breathers, had no issues.

    water crossing taco.jpg

I do some minor water crossings here and there but the water is never higher then the bottom of my doors.

I did an arb with a snorkel upgrade pre filter. Primarily did it for dust rather than water.
But remember there is way more to water crossings than just intake protection. Electronics on modern vehicles aswell as diff events need to be accounted for. But I personally won't knowingly risk anything over a tire depth for risk of getting water into anything electrical. The note with sealing the airbox above likely has to do with the fact that the airbox has drain holes in it. And the seal around the airfilter it good but I wouldn't rely on it if it were submerged for any length of time.

I'm all for intake protection and a believer in a snorkel just urging caution on water as I did alot of damage to my second gen with water years ago.

    20240705_194455.jpg

Also nothing says cool offroad rig like a snorkel. I'm here for maximum broverlander points these days

    20220311_191828.jpg

That's no major water crossings and full fender liners

In a vehicle like a 3G tacoma yes, its pretty much just for dust.

For example, buddy has a 80 series landcruiser with a snorkel and he treats that thing like a submarine, no joke. His interior got soaked dozens of times. That bad boy just keeps on going...

Last August I missed the ruts in a long muddy hole. water just over top of tires. bottomed out due to the ruts. Wasn’t prepared. Had to wait for help and left truck running as exhaust was under water also. Replaced alternator on the trail, starter and fan clutch after returned home. Spent 3 more days wheeling after incident. Spent 2 weeks removing seats, carpet, and pad to get all cleaned. I now have winch and full set of recovery gear. Holes are now more thoroughly checked. Just looking for extra insurance if I do something dumb again.

Yeah i try to stay away from water crossings and mud as much as i can.

I paid a lot of money for this truck, and I want it to last me at least another 15-20 years.

Then break out the saw and get ready to cut. Snorkel is the way. With the stock head I don't recommend siliconing the intake drainage holes i have rubber plugs I put in before I hit the trail. So if you encounter rain and get some inside it will drain out. Not much of a concern with the pre filter now.

I stand by the arb. Iv had it on for 3 years and it's holding up great so far. Pricey but so far quality. And the template was damn close to perfect.

Yes - typical snorkels are not water snorkels...

Playing in a mudhole just outside of town - maybe. If you don't like your truck.

Most people traveling off road and far from civilization will avoid mud and deep water as much as possible. People complain about sensitive electronics - this concern is true when water crossings are concerned.

Old, low tech vehicles are better for that. I've submarined and have been up mid doors in mud. But not in a 3rd gen taco!

And not my vehicles - and these eventually were destroyed by such use.
    Such 'fun' gets expensive.

As I always say, send it! Beat the sh!t outta my awd CRV and never had lasting problems....

But seriously Op, just drive through a water crossing very s-l-o-w-l-y....

P.S. taller 33" pizza cutter tires REALLY help.

    IMG_4280.jpg IMG_4013.jpg IMG_4018.jpg IMG_4021.jpg 33” pizza cutters are what I have. lol.

The “dry” picture is 2 months later and 1000 miles away. Winch installed so it doesn’t sit there running 45 minutes waiting on help.

Been 7,000 miles since. All systems work properly

Lol, maybe the OP does need a snorkel! :) Props to you brother for being willing to trash the fuck out of your truck for the fun of it! I used to do that kind of shit (with zero concerns about consequences) in my 72 FJ-55.

I’ve had 3 FJ80s, 2 FJ40s, 1FJ60, 2 4runners, 2 Tundras, and 3 pre tacoma pickups. Most kept in pristine condition or were being restored. I’m 63 and want to enjoy what they are capable of. While not abusing on purpose and I didn’t check this spot good enough I also understand things will happen. It’s a Toyota. Let’s go places. That’s now my motto. lol.

Well, fortunately you have the all-weather floormats to catch that bit of excess mud.

Random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
I’m on Dobbinson and have installed them all on different customers. Anyway, don’t forget more important to extend rear differential, transmission and transfer case vents. Cheers!
