Any recommendations on driving in the Texas slush we get every few years or so? This would be a mixture of rain, sleet, snow, etc. Sometimes it a solid block of ice, rarely is it deep snow, mostly it's slush. Are you safer in 4wd? What about 2wd with traction off and LSD on? I would think if you have to go slow enough, MTS would work best.

First winter with the truck and there are so damn many 4x4 options it boggles my mind. I am well aware of keeping your distance, etc.

Oh hell yea. 4Hi on the icy highway is great. Just remember you can't slow down any better when your in 4Hi :) That burrns a lot of people, false confidence going fast in 4wd on the highway. Gotta be careful. Also, don't ever use cruise control on icy roads....

If you are in 4 hi going over 60 miles an hour what do you do if you need to stop in a hurry? This is for automatics off coarse, manuals just down shift which helps a lot slowing down.
I gave up shifting gears to get home 20 years ago and bad road conditions are really the only time I miss a stick. Now I just slow down when conditions are bad enough for 4wd.

You can manually downshift an auto for deceleration too , just saying

Yes, you sure can. Only difference for me is when I'm driving a stick, my hand is mostly on the shifter, especially in bad conditions like mentioned here. That makes reaction time a lot shorter. Driving my automatic I feel like I'd be just a little slower reacting and that second or two could make a difference. So I slow down.

Not saying you shouldn't slow down , I'm saying you can decelerate an auto by manually downshifting just like you can a manual tranny , I do it all the time , especially in snow

my cousin has an FJ with it.
Our street is always the last one to be plowed and both him and I work construction so we are always out before they plow. There's been times he's had to pull my jetta off our street when leaving (he lives a few houses down)

He swears by it as being helpful.
Not amazing, but it does help a lot because there are other trucks on our street and I've seen them leaving, even in 4x4 they have a hard time since our street is a horseshoe shape and the portion of the curve is a hill. A lot of cars and trucks have a hard time with it, I'm lucky I'm at the top of the hill right before the main street so not hard for me :D

Not sure if that is how its supposed to be used. Its worth testing, but like @timothom stated, it could switch if let you off the peddle reducing the load on the drive train. I haven't tested that myself.

The OZ knows what he is talking about..:canada:
Where I really love 4X4 is on a multi-lane like the 400 Hwy here in Ont.... The right lane is dry to the pavement in the tire tracks, but the passing lane has 3-4" of snow or slush and the right lane drivers do not want to go out there, so they all drive at 60KMS in a 100Km zone....I'll just flip the button to 4X4 and ease out into the passing lane full of crap....then slowly accelerate by all the old women... then hit the 2x4 button as I'm slowly transitioning back onto the pavement in the right lane... Works great for me...

The main thing to watch for is the sudden pull of the slush, if that is what you are going out into...(snow is not much of an issue) just ease into it gradually, keep the front tires relatively straight and Get-Er-Done.... as Larry would say...!!

    4X4 forever...!!!:burnrubber:

His truck looks just like mine. barcelona red, no winch, street tires, and blacked out grill. I thought my blacked out grill would keep me from getting stuck.

you are telling me...this is wrong?

4hi and fucking punch it! You'll either get stuck or you won't. Driving in the snow is fun. I've never had a reason to try crawl control in the snow. I'm pretty curious now, as to how it would work. If it would that is. Good tires, some smarts in driving and 4hi is all you need. Know what you can and can't do with the truck. We got 18 inches of fresh snow here and the Tacoma and Cooper stt pros work great!

Far and away, snow is my favorite driving "terrain". Praying for more snow. Had days saved up to take off for Snow-fall, and the weather channel blew it this past Tuesday here in Indianapolis. We got A decent amount of accumulation on a <1 inch prediction.. it was torture watching it just keep coming.. stuck in the office. All the plow-boys were out making $$$ and only a few unplowed lots close to my office remained by lunch. Got the Toyota its first taste of snow finally though.

4 lo and crawl control is the only way. But seriously though we don't need 4wd drive here. Just drive normal, if you come to a hill and you spin just pop it in 4, pull away then go back to 2. Been in 2wd trucks around here for years and even in the 4wd ones I don't use it.

Every once in a while you will see someone that bought 4wd just for the weather down here every few years and those are the types that do not need to be on the road, it is easy getting around the metroplex as most people stay home.

If you can get moving, turn on 4wd. Once you are moving, 4wd does nothing but keep your momentum up. Do not go too fast, you cannot stop any faster with 4wd. Find a few open stretches of road to see how the truck stops and slides on ice. Leave traction control on unless it is keeping you from moving (like trying to start on an ice hill).
