I beg to differ. I was in 2wd in a rented 2019 Sport when I came up on some black ice. The truck started to slide bad, but all I did was take my foot off the gas and a few minor steering corrections and the truck did the rest. I'm sure if was driving my first gen I would have crashed

I didn't find the stock tires to be great in the snow, but they did the job. Traction control in 2WD was the most frustrating part, left me dead in the water consistently at the first intersection from my house on the way to work (left turn crossing traffic).

Ran through the life of the stocks at 45k, 3-4/32 tread left and on developed a bulge. I pulled the trigger on some Falken Wildpeaks in stock size and now I'm itching for some snow!! Gonna be a good winter with these on!

I don't have 4x4 and I've never had an issue in the snow. Good tires and knowing how to drive go a long way.

What's the point of not putting it in 4x4 if the roads/trails are covered? Just curious. I get that you can make it through, but for what reason would you try, is there a downside to having it in 4x4?

    No, not at all.
It is really a rhetorical question. "If I am doing fine in 2WD, meaning I can stop, go and steer, do I need to put it in 4WD? To me that means no. I put it in 4WD only if I am not able to go and steer effectively. Stopping has nothing to do with 4WD. If I start slipping (VSC lights) then I put it in 4WD. If I am going into the deeper stuff, automatically put it in 4WD. Otherwise, I just drive lol.
