When the snow is hard, we ride on top of it. The more people that go in front, the deeper the tire tracks get. Less clearance after those tracks are deep results in all 4 wheels in the air.

+1 Yup, once you allow the deep ruts, you will have issues. Once you high center, you pretty much screwed. Will need to remind those who are in front not to tear it all up for those in the rear. I met a guy named Alfred once snow wheeling and he taught more than I would have thought ever about wheeling in the snow. If you can move an inch, you are not stuck. There will moments where the skinny pedal will help but slow, constant forward movement is what you want. Once you feel your tires spinning, stop. Back up a little and go forward slowly. You can gradually pack the snow and inch by inch, move. Trust me, your instincts say GO! GO! GO!, but it works. Crazy but works.

Will call ranger for better info. Confusing. I know the seasonal closure is in effect but only on dirt trails/ roads. M.E.T should and as far as I have known not been effected by that seasonal closure. I have gone snow wheeling many times up that way and as long as you stay on the main road, no issues. Maybe he was in a restricted area. That's really odd. Will report back tomorrow as what I find out.

I think he was off the main road. If you read the notice carefully, it says closure from the " Wheeled motor vehicle use is prohibited on the 5-mile section of the MET from the Silver Fork Road junction to the Iron Mountain Sno-Park near Highway 88 during the winter season when the road is snow covered and used by snowmobiles on the Silverbear Snowmobile Trails system." We prob won't even get that far. That section is almost to the other side. I will call tomorrow to get a definitive answer but I am pretty sure.

Yeah, I talked to a friend up here a few days ago and he pointed that out. The section from where Silver Fork Rd comes into MET to the gate at Hwy 88 is "Closed to Wheeled Traffic." It's essentially snow mobile only for that 5 mile stretch. I'm guessing they posted that on their website this year because of the lack of snow up there. Usually, you cannot get up that far (7K ft elev) until June (or July last summer) unless you have a rig designed to travel across deep snow (which I've seen many of going up MET in the winters). They used to have a gate on my end at that junction, but it broke down and was removed years ago. All the paved roads below that are open to wheeled traffic. It's only the dirt roads that are closed due to an agreement by the forest service over the environmental impact lawsuit about 10 years ago.

OK well due to unpredictable snow level. This may or may not happen after all. Will update tomorrow with a definitive answer as I would know from my co-workers. Their rigs have winches. So without them, snow wheeling would just be too risky.

We got 2 inches last night and we're supposed to get 6 more inches between tonight and tomorrow. Supposed to be snowing most of the day tomorrow. So it's also a question of whether people want to go up when it's snowing. Could be brutal doing recovery if snowing. And it'll get deeper behind us too if we travel up the hill. While I love driving around up here when it's snowing, not sure it's a good idea going up MET in weather like that. On the plus side, we may not be going too far up it (I doubt we'd make it past Capps Crossing Rd). FYI, I now have a 30' strap and 2 shackles.

You guys wanna do Prairie City as an alternate in case this falls through? Still keep something going? Its more than feasible for stock guys to have a little fun. Maybe with luck there wont be thousands of people like the open house and I can kick it up to speed :)
