I'm sitting in Denver airport waiting for my connecting flight to salt lake before driving to Jackson hole.

It's scary how naked the mountains look.. Last time I was here there was snow everywhere

Got my second day in today here in the Northeast, first day was back on December 18 at Okemo but that doesn't even count since only about 2 trails were open, got some decent runs in at Cranmore Mountain today in NH, conditions are pretty crappy but it was nice to get out and ride. Pretty much no natural snow as of yet at most mountains, this time last year we already had a couple big storms.

Headed to Jay Peak in VT next weekend, conditions there should be pretty good, hopefully.

This may not be the best place to ask this, but I need some help riding toeside/carving. I have been 3 or 4 times, and I still can't get toeside down. Every attempt lasts about 8 seconds and I end up on my face. You guys got any tips for learning?

balance is key....don't over commit....keep your eye looking where you want to go...keep the knees bent...dig in good with you back toe...use the front foot to help pivot your turns if you are having troubles going back and forth between heelside and toeside...

Baker is awesome. Simply awesome. And about the only place in WA with consistent snow right now.

Keep an eye on Crystal Mountain, too. It hasn't been getting much snow, but on bluebird days with fast groomers and Mt. Rainier staring you in the face, it's still fantastic. On days when it does have snow, it's the largest terrain in the Northwest (aside from Whistler).

In Oregon, I hear Mt. Bachelor is fantastic. I've ridden Mt. Hood Meadows and Timberline. I'm not sure of their snow levels, but Meadows is pretty cool, with the top chair being above treeline. You get about 1000' of vert long the ridges before descending. On a clear day, you can see Mt. Adams, Mt. Jefferson and all the way to Mt. St. Helens. The top chairs close occasionally from wind, though.

I usually ride at Crystal and Aplental in WA. Alpental is very small, but very technical. It also has backcountry that rivals almost anywhere.

Mt. Baker is more European-style, with piste and off-piste riding. The lines between the grooms and the rest are pretty blurred. It's also operated by the Parks Service, so the lift tickets are much cheaper. ($46 mid-week after tax)
