If we need an Ocotillo Guru, I know the place pretty Damn well. I can lead you guys to all the fun spots including the 4x4 Park so us dudes with front axles can have a little challenge.

There's a lot of sand you can pretty much only go up in 4x4, shell reef has some very steep climbs I like to do, and of course there's the obstacle park which is full of fun, challenging obstacles for all ranges of difficulty in 4WD.

We just did two night runs out there last month. I know you guys will have a blast. I can take you to fish creek wash in Anza where we can drive inside a slot canyon (great spot for lunch), and if anybody has firearms, we can unload some mags at the train tracks BLM area.

I would love to join in but driving this gas guzzler would be painful, I'm getting 10.1 mpg (220 miles to a full tank - $80), which I would need to fill up 5-6x is just insane.

Haha, she actually hasn't put it on yet. She was thinking of waiting until she decides to get a front bumper and then she'll get the heavier duty front coils to support the weight. She might put it on for this trip, though!
Actually no! I graduated so I'll be coming from Encinitas. We should convoy out!

My parents and I like the 4x4 trails more, so we'll meet at ocotillo wells but will likely go out to the more technical trails. We're thinking of exploring the calcite mine trail up in the north end of the park. It's more technical (but not too bad, no armor required, I don't think) and it looks like it has some beautiful views and hikes. I think there are some dirt roads that'll go from Ocotillo to the calcite mine turn-off so it'll shortcut a bit of distance going back through borrego springs.

Here's a good map of the trails: http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/638/files/ABDSPmap.pdf

Im from around ocotillo, barrego springs, and superstition. All three of these places are very fun and good to go out to. Ocotillo and Superstition are mostly sand hils with some mountains. Barrego has its fair share of washes and caves, along with some great mountains.

So coyote canyon is only closed from June 1 to October 1. I did it in winter and it was beautiful, but the trail didn't go through that forest. It looks like it might be a side thing, though, but I don't remember seeing it (not that I was looking very hard). They close it because the vehicles driving through scare bighorn sheep away from the water there which is one of the few places with water year-round. It's unfortunate but I'd rather be able to drive in there during some time of the year than not at all if they close it permanently. The NorCal folks know the pain with Deer Valley and all the El Dorado county trails that were closed in at least 2013 to help the meadows recover from trail erosion.

Unless Parks dept & BLM changed things it was routinely closed from as you say June 1 & re open Sept.1 not because of any erosion but thats the rutting period for the pacific crest bighorn sheep (mating season) they may have extended it to Oct 1 as indicated & sadly that badass water crossing is no more from what I hear

Yeah I called the office a year ago and they said it was closed to October and the map I posted in here a few posts ago says October.
Aw man, that's too bad. I was a little disappointed that I didn't see it when I went but getting up in the canyon/basin is surreal and definitely made up for it!

Most definantely one of the strangely beautiful/least explored areas in the dez. You miss alot when mobbing down a wash going 70mph haha...

Very seldom do I haul ass thru the desert anymore, only exception would be San Felipe wash, almost like talladega 4-5 wide WFO haha.. not set up for that kind of running
