Do the 5th Gen 4Runner have the driveshaft "clunk" like the 4th Gen 4Runners?

The reason they clunk is because people don't grease the slip yoke on the driveshaft. Hit it with grease every 5,000 miles and no clunk. My 05 never did it.

Not to get too far off topic but proper lube with proper grease is important , also around 2013 they started to use a new driveshaft with a hardened chrome like slip/spline that was supposed to eliminate it but with those coils in the rear if you don't grease it it'll make noise. Having said that , I've never had the problem with my 2005 sport or the several 5th gen 4Runners I've had.

Does this mean they're switching from a single-cardan driveshaft design to a double-cardan design with the diff pinion pointed at the carrier bearing?

I went back and looked at the linked pick. It doesn't look like the axle angle has been changed to point the pinion at the carrier ala double-cardan.

If they're keeping the same driveshaft design - I'd remain skeptical. The quote sounds like empty sales pitch words. "We went off and did important engineering stuff with gears and springs and angles. I'll buy you dinner if you can find a problem."

Playing the odds that most folks never experienced a problem in the first place.

Final word? Take a good long test drive in a variety of conditions before you agree on a truck. And if the salesman says "oh, we'll fix that right up for you" he's blowing smoke up your @$$.

Thats cus during decel you your rear suspension droops at makes that 0 degree angle at the cb an angle again. Also when you set the center at 0 you run into the fact that now you are trying to setup your driveshaft with front and rear u joints opposing, but you cant cus they are 90* out of phase.

Too bad Toyota in their infinite wisdom didn't put a fitting on there to grease. It's like no dip stick to check the auto trans. :(

Looks like Mike Sweers just gave some ammo to all those guys in arbitration trying to get some justice on what Toyota has been up until now calling a "characteristic of the truck".

I fixed my truck by installing a one piece driveshaft, its completely smooth now. If anyone is interested in checking it out there are some pictures in my gallery.

Why? They couldn't or wouldn't fix it. Toyota totally screwed you.

This is crazy. Where is the Toyota quality? Great for '16 owners, but you don't build a reputation by screwing folks with trucks still under warranty.
