Been wanting to do this for a while and ran across a nice old tailgate this past weekend. I think it turned out pretty cool.

Damn. Nicest bench in that style I have seen. And pretty heavy duty also

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
Nice work -- problem is-- that this will give a new market to all the Tacoma tailgate thieves --or any other brand as well.
    That bench will last forever

LOL, true, my bad! Yeah worst case I will have to refinish the wood every few years. It's a little north of solid. My wife was not very enthused when I started as it was to set on the front porch, she has no vision and saw it as some junk tailgate I wasted money on. When I started saying things like "patina" she looked at me like I was loosing it but by the time I was finishing up she was sending pictures of it to her friends saying how beautiful it is. I figured I would post it up here to give someone else the idea to go build something. Thanks for all the positive feedback. You all feel free to take aspects of my design and make it your own, hell build a replica if you want. The cool thing about this stuff you build on the fly is no two are ever alike. I used cherry wood and even with that and paying $130 for the tailgate I am only into it for $250 or so. Not bad for a bench that will last generations and is a little different than what you can pickup at Home Depot. Total build time is about 18 hours while drinking beer in my garage.

The best part of the build is my daughter. My 10 year old son could care less what I am doing in the garage but my three year old little sidekick is always in the garage. Drives my wife crazy that she is like me and is always working on stuff. She hangs with me through whatever I am doing no matter how long or late I am working. We moved the bench out on the porch last night and she said "look mom, I made a nice bench". In her mind I am helping her. My father in law stopped by last night and she took him out on the porch and was like "look at my bench". I guess it is her's now.

Sorry she refuses to wear pants or shorts at home. It all panties all the time! Our battle cry is "NO PANT'S"

I told my wife that I am saving this picture and one day with my little angel gets married (in 30 or 40 years) I am going to frame this picture. Refurbish the bench back to how it is now, put this picture on it with a big bow that says, take your bench with you!

When I walk in the house after work I yell "NO PANT's" and wherever Tyler is I hear a "NO PANT's", normally followed by my wife yelling from wherever she is "YOU HAVE TO WEAR PANT's"! I follow with "FU#K PANT's"!
