So I just bought an 08 tundra with the 6 speed trans. But it will not go into reverse or into 4 low.

Any help would be great. New to Toyota. 08 270000 miles 5.7 6 speed automatic.will not go into 4 low or reverse, or neutral.

Definitely recommend checking the fluid level. AT's run off of the fluid

 

Throw a trans in it and be done

Please clarify the issue a little bit. Do you mean it will not shift out of park, and wont go into 4 low?
Needs to be at a stop and in neutral to shift into 4 low. If it won't shift out of park, check that your brake lights are working (confirm brake switch works).

Ok the shifter moves back up lights come on. But will not go into gear. Are there solenoids that could be stuck or something like that. And when in neutral it goes forward also. Even in park it wants to go forward.

 

I agree with the boys .
Shift linkage is most common with the 5 speed A750 series transmission in the Tacoma as well AB60 series 6 speed transmission found in the Tundra .
Loss of reverse in the AB60 series transmission is always mechanical . No solenoids or computer controls are used for the shift into reverse .
Will the truck start in Neutral ?

Do you by chance know if the previous owner got the truck stuck in deep mud or snow ? When this happens and the driver spins the tires for a long period of time , he / she can overheat the forward clutch . The forward clutch gets soooo hot it welds itself to the forward ring gear . This is one explanation why the truck drives forward in Neutral as well as reverse .

The previous owner was driving down the road. Stopped at the store went to back out and no reverse

 

Sounds like she let go internally personally.

Mechanical failure at this point unfortunately . Very unusual for these transmissions to drop reverse gear all at once . Hope you got the truck for a good deal .

 

Ok thanks a bunch what years of ab60 will go into an 08 tundra. And if I were to rebuild this one would a master kit be enough to fix this or should I worry about valve body and gear wear.

 

Call your local wrecking yard for years that will work . They get these questions every day . These transmissions should be a dime a dozen as they are very reliable .

Would be nice to see your truck pop by the shop . I wouldn't mind tackling this job as this is very unusual for a Tundra

I would plan for some hard parts failure , a master kit with bushings , torque converter , and a valve body recalibration kit if I was rebuilding your trans

Ok I've rebuilt a couple I'm no expert by any means but I'm short on time so think I'll just throw a low mileage trans in it. Thanks again for all the info. Still strange how all forward gears shift so nicely but no reverse and neutral goes forward. Guess I'm going to have to pull this one apart
