I removed my glove box and found this surprise behind it:

What is it? I took it out because a bunch of the wires were cut. Should it be left there? Here's pictures of the connectors and wires in that area.

Well that's interesting... Was never given a remote starter when I bought the truck 2 years ago.

So this just got really interesting... I just tried starting the truck. It starts and then just shuts off right after turning over.

Is there anyway I can make use of the remote starter? Or if I wanted a remote starter, would the whole thing have to be replaced?

I had the module removed when I tried starting it. I plugged it back in and it started right up.

That was most likely used as part of a remote start system. If you're using factory remotes, the previous owner probably removed the remote start system and left that thing in there instead of repairing the wiring after removing it.

Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense. Guess I'll just leave it there in case I decide to put a new system in there.

Is there any reason I should repair the wires back to factory instead?

Looks like a previous owner was doing some mods.
I always tell anyone buying one of these trucks used to have them checked out very close for mods.
Some of them are fine, some are just crazy.

Yeah I agree. I wish I had checked mine a little more closely before I bought it since even though it had a clean carfax, when I was installing my grillcraft grill last year I realized the previous owner had hit something with the passenger front side since the tabs on the headlight were all broken and then later found out the hood had been repainted. Lessons learned.

But I never would have thought to check behind the glove box lol.

Trying to repair the wiring would be a real pain in the ass. I've also never seen that brand of transponder bypass, so I don't even know what kind of system to recommend if you wanted to add remote start. He probably removed it because it was a poorly installed knock off brand remote starter and wasn't working properly. And why that module was all the way behind the glove box is even more of a mystery. I usually hide my security / alarm / remote start components as high up in the dash as possible, all harnesses soldered and fully insulated with tape so that nobody could tell it was there, even when searching for it under the dash... which is why I didn't even consider removing my remote start / alarm from my last truck lol.

I would recommend replacing it with a nice Python or Viper remote start / alarm system. It will probably be easy to identify all of the wires you will need to install it with, since they will most likely still have crimps / t-taps / harnesses attached to them. The new Python remotes are pretty sweet, too. It's an awesome thing to have, especially with SmartStart.

And they are STUPID cheap on Amazon.

    http://www.amazon.com/Directed-Electronics-DSM250-Smart-Start/dp/B004XT6GR0

    http://www.amazon.com/Xpress-DBALL-Databus-Interface-Module/dp/B0047Q9AXG

You should need all of those parts plus a 12v relay. The smart start module is optional, that just allows you to start / lock / locate your truck from a computer or an app on your iPhone or Android. Service plan for that is like $70 per year.

But beware, this type of wiring is not for beginners. I'm an expert and it still took me about 10 hours to get it all wired up properly.

Try to use the factory remotes like a car starter. It may work. Some companies will actually program the OEM remotes into the car starter system. Try to hold the unlock for w few seconds and stuff like that. You may find that you have a working remote starter system and don't ned to buy a new one.

Thank you very much. I'll probably get one of those 2 systems before next winter.
