I’m sorry but how is the engine/trans superior?

I drove my dads 4R yesterday and it’s nothing special.

In comparison to the 3rd gen tacoma. 4runner is better. Its mainly the awful 6 speed auto they put in them.

My 2016 doesn't have any problems getting to 80, when it tries jumping between 5th and 6th I flip it to S5 mode, no more shifting but still plenty of power.

I do like the adaptive cruise in the 4runner, I don't have that in my Tacoma

6 AT in the Tacoma is bulletproof though. I don’t get it.

I drove 2 AT Tacomas and did not find anything abnormal. Press the throttle and she goes, mash it and it goes even faster.

The 6speed in the Tacoma is probably its biggest flaw. The fact that is basically needs a tune in order to make in not tolerable on long highway drives says alot.

If guys don’t want “gear hunting” or whatever it’s called, just use S mode as per manual. It even states in hilly conditions to use S mode.

My dad drives in S4 in city all the time.

You shouldn’t have to throw it into s4 mode to not get gear hunting.

You should test a Lexus GX460 premium with air in the back. Rides a lot better and the 4.6 V8 is much better suited for the weight. I miss my 2014, great vehicle.

I never said it has an issue getting to 80, but trying to even slowly accelerate on the highway the trans will shift a bunch.

The 6 speed is one of the things I prefer in the Tacoma and I drive both 4runner and Tacoma weekly.

For long trips for more than two people 4runner is preferred due to the space. But if it's just the wife and I we usually take the Tacoma.

But thats what the manual recommends since there are 2OD gears.

    Yeah.
I just drove over 1,000 miles in my wife's 4Runner Limited. I think it rides better on longer highway trips than my TRD Pro Tacoma, but it's a Limited and doesn't have E-rated tires. It didn't hunt gears on the highway like my Tacoma does, but I must say that it is somewhat of a pig compared to my Tacoma. The 4.0 is not nearly as smooth/refined and felt quite a bit slower. The 4Runner interior is nicer, but the infotainment system is more dated. The 4Runner is long overdue for a refresh.

I would avoid buying a 3rd gen Tacoma again for the transmission alone. 1st or 2nd gen tacoma i would buy or the current/older 4runners with the 4.0s and 3.4s.

My Tacoma was 10k cheaper than the 4R. And I hated the 6 speed auto so much I got the 6 speed manual. I can’t say that the 5 speed is that much better. The 4.slow + 5 speed still feels like shit compared to any other modern vehicle imo

My son owns my old 2004 and I still drive it from time to time. It doesn't drive nearly as well as my 3rd gen and takes every little bit to get up to 70.

It gets worst gas mileage than the 4runner and I don't miss that little truck at all.

It has been reliable though, it's a good little truck but not as good as my 3rd gen.

4.0 makes torque down low like a truck should. Why would anyone want to make their power in the top end in a pickup truck like the 3.5.

According to you they are and according me they are not. Just presenting a different point of view. I already had 2 Tacomas, I wanted a “better” engine and trans combo than what was found in my first one. And I walked away disappointed.
After all the praise I read about them on here I wanted to present a different point of view. There is some serious delusion happening around the praising of the 4/5 combo. It’s not great
