Seems well worth it if a new and extremely long-in-the-tooth 4R is gonna be $60k+ out the door.

I don’t know Toyota doesn’t carry that sort of brand premium for me. I’d rather roll in a defender

Alls Im’a gonna say is, (thank you @cryptolime for the explanation) if your Tacoma drives lethargically, I highly recommend you disconnect the battery for a few hours.

So in my case, when it was time to drive it after reconnecting it(thinking it lost the transmission learnings), I gave the gas pedal Hell Week hoping that the driving would get more aggressive. I was thinking, forget that “but it’s a new engine right out of the lot. I have to be careful” mentality…so it was mid to WOT craziness…now the difference is night and day. It re-learned (I think it’s still learning) the fuel maps (hope I got that right) and driving the Tacoma’s 3.5 is genuinely pleasing now.

Damn it feels good being a 3rd Gen Tacoma owner.

When I jumped into my buddy's 4Runner ( I owned 4 runner in 2000) I thought here comes the envy... uhh nope. Yep, steering, just didn't feel tight/responsive. Okay here comes that 4.0.... I was not impressed. I walked away w/ ZERO envy. And my truck w/ an OTT tune.... dunks on a stock 4runner.

And another thing, the 4runner is much better off road than a Tacoma

Wonder how toyota is able to sell thousands of "not-drivable" tacomas every year

Yep. Some of the posts really got me into thinking that the 4R is just a better suv version of the taco. But boy was I wrong

Sounds like that to me as well.My Wife's Limited is absolutely an enjoyable ride on the highway and around town. It is way ahead of my Tacoma even with 285s, lifted on 5100s, leather, heated seats and a KDMAX tune and lots more mods. I love both of our vehicles and have no plans on changing that. The 4Runner is our traveling vehicle and just did a flawless trip to Tennessee for 12 days and with two kids, luggage and the Smoky Mountains we loved it. The KDMAX tune on the 4Runner gets us about 19.7 averaging in town and 22 on the road. The fit and finish, ride and over all quality is better than my Tacoma. We normally put less than 5000 miles a year on both our Toyota vehicles, I detail them weekly, garaged kept and hope they last us 15 to 20 years. For me being retired I will keep my Tacoma and her working from home she is definitely not interested in an upgrade of any sort, plus we have a mint 99 4Runner that we use to run around town, horse stables, pool and short weekend trips and its sitting with 300k miles and looks like she has 30k miles on it.

T4r has 3.72 diff vs tacoma 3.92 (looks like they used trd trim in the sample).
If they used SR5 tacoma with 3.72 diff , it would have wiped t4r. I've done a "real word application" in my SR5 vs t4r.

I went from a 2nd gen to an ORP and while I miss the utility of a truck the 4Runner just fits our family so much better. Road trips with two car seats and gear are actually comfortable

Thanks I was looking for a "factory plus" aesthetic and wanted to keep the unsprung weight down to preserve what few MPGs I have lol

Yeah but now you’re modifying it. Im talking stock. You could slap a supercharger on the 3.5 and of course it will win. Another mistake on the taco was gearing.
