Not that I have plans of turning mine into a Uboat or anything. But this fucking storm has us surounded. And Ive been home for 5 days going stir crazy. My 2.7 Base Taco is so not high just a 2.75" lift and 15" 275s. Started to go to the grocery store but instead Took it round the block cause were on a F×××ing Island in our Subdivision. And did not want to risk water damage. Got me thinking I wonder just how high water can go in the engine bay with out boging out. Surely by then there would be water in the cabin. But in a life or death situation....Surely theres some crazys on this forum that have traveled this path both unintentionly and some said screw it.

Up to the top of the inner fender liner I'm guessing before it hits the airbox

What about water contaminating the differential fluid via the breather?

My model dont have the diff breather. Guess thats good. Even then a fluid dump and refill would be in order. Otherwise what good would it do to spend thousands raising a truck if its only as high as the diff breather ?

You put the diff breather up high around the gas cap.

I'd be willing to bet that it does. It allows for the expansion of oil when heated by venting air rather than blowing out the seals.

I'd be more worried about what's in the water than the depth, I wouldn't go 1/4th up the wheels without a diff breather. I might consider letting my tires be fully submerged with breathers and a snorkel

    Reserected from the dead.
If I was in that situation, I could give 2 shits about contaminated diff fluid. Water in the diff is not going to shut the truck down in the near future.

Make your emergency run, then worry about fluid changes.

You said you're basically on an island, how far will you have to drive in water?

If it's a daily driver and worth more than $2K, I open the door and look out. If it up to the rockers, I back up. If it's a beater, hell with it. drive till your butt gets wet.

Just for info, if the water gets to the bottom of the dash, the insurance companies consider it a total.

Exactly. Life or death situation, I'd be confident our tacomas would get us out, worry about the damage on it later. With my prerunner, at stock height, it's 20 inches before it hits the bottom of the cab. 17 inches before it hits the exhaust pipe so if i go in water deeper than that, just don't stop.

A couple weeks ago I was at my parents house in a New Orleans. It flooded one weekend because of a ton of rain and the city water pumps were broke. My buddies house was flooding (life or death situation) and I went to go get him. I don't currently have any lift on my Prerunner and the deepest I went was up to the grill. I've been fine ever since

I have a 5 lug (which I believe yours is) and I definitely have a breather...changing out that diff fluid should be a top priority. Then extend the breather.

There are ROADS around here with river crossings and no bridges where the water is 18-24" deep. People drive through it every day. I've done it countless times in a number of vehicles over the years. I feel pretty good as long as the tire isn't completely underwater, but I've made crossings up to my headlights and had the gas pedal underwater in Jeeps in the past.

But this is on well marked roads and trails for short distances. The problem in an urban environment is not being able to know exactly where the shoulders of the road is. It is VERY easy to drive off the road into a ditch where the water goes from 2' to 10'. It all looks the same from the top.

One of these pics shows what seems to be just water on the roadway. I would be very wary of any distance in water over 1/2 your wheel/tire diameter. Your air intake is up from that, but splashing water has a way of finding things. If the water is moving, or you can't see clearly defined road edges, no go.
