I'm don't buy it. Dimensioned lumber comes in 3/4" and 1-1/2" thickness and since the 1-1/2" is too thick to fit, best to plan for 3/4" at a time. Oh, but wait, he could buy a full sheet of tongue/groove flooring plywood and use a hand saw to cut boards from. That usually measures 1-1/8". Alternately bring a knife to whittle some standard 2X4's down to 1.25" thick. Yes, that would work. But better plan for Easter next year if he starts today.

No, as far as I know, no Tacoma ever came with a 'bottle jack' as far as what daily nomenclature suggests. Just screw jacks.

If you want to get technical....

Webster defines a 'bottle jack' as any jack shaped like a bottle.

Webster defines a 'screw jack' as any jack that uses a screw mechanism to lift.

In common use of the term, a bottle jack is a jack roughly in the shape of a bottle that uses hydrolic force to lift.

In my opinion, real world, Tacoma's come with screw jacks.

Either way, they are pretty much useless. Did find a use once, if you need to force an LCA down in a pinch, if you angle it just right you can catch the LCA and the frame just good enough to pop an assembly back in. :)

Cardboard is in Canada. They probably don't sell "2X4"s up there. Do they call their boards "50X100"s?

I would agree with this definition of jack types.

I wouldn't use extension's on the top of the jack. Depending on how much lift you have and how much more lift you need to get out of the jack, I'd just cut a block of 8"x8" wood or whatever suits your lift and throw it in the truck. If you need to use the jack, place the block under the jack.

Another issue is that once you get above 6" lift and 35" tires, using bottle jacks becomes a challenge. You need 2 of them to pick the front off the ground. You have to put a block under jack#1, put it under the front jack point, extend it to Max height, then put Jack#2 under the crossmember and extend it. Then lower jack#1, place another block under it, then extend jack#1 to get the wheels off the ground. Do what ever work needs to be done. Then, set jack#1 down so that the cross member is back resting on jack#2, remove a block from jack#1, lower jack#2... And so on to walk it down.

Using a shop jack I still have to use an 8"x8" block when lifting from the front jack point.

    Edit......

Looking at notes, with 33's using OEM screw/bottle jack to get the front tires up off the going, still had to use 2 jacks.

Pardon the 'Pun', I have Tons (lol) of these cheap EBay hydraulic bottle jacks in all shapes and sizes. They are like $35 each max. Cheap enough to where I just buy one for each application and leave it just for that. Never had one fail.

Cheap, work well, just buy one in the size you need and add it to your Arsenal.

Actually I carry plug kit and air compressor. In 20+ years across all vehicles, I was never not able to make it home by patching an off-road tire. To date the only time I ever installed the spare tire on this truck was I think in 2009 on 610 loop in Houston. Was running OEM's, a work truck in front of me dropped all of it's tools. Blew 2 tires and swerved off the road. Used the spare and plugged the other to get home.
