The biggest issue with the Nissan’s is the low-hanging frame rails. Ground clearance for both trucks is measured at the diff pumpkin, so doesn’t show the serious detriment to the Frontier platform off-road. You need to lift a frontier 2-3” to get the same clearance under the frame (where you might high center, damage the frame, or get hung up) that you get from a stock Taco.

The frontiers are great trucks, but best kept to the gravel roads. That’s why you rarely see guys wheeling them. They are designed for good on-road handling and interior head-room. The Tacoma has a high floor, to make room for a higher frame, which leads to the complaints about the Tacoma seating position and head room, but makes them a superior platform offroad.

thats the one reason I might go back to a 1/2 or 3/4 ton. The powerband is narrow on these trucks you really have to romp on it sometimes.well that and my dump trailer.

Man, there is just absolutely no way in hell I would have even considered a Frontier over the Tacoma. Am I the only one who could care less if a 6 cylinder truck feels somewhat gutless? Resale and reliability is what I care about.

I actually like the Frontier. I just have a hard time paying anything close to their asking price for a design that is ancient. The upright backseat kills me as well. Interestingly enough they did pull a Toyota though where the new motor makes 1 less torque and about 40 more HP, just like Toyota on a second vs. 3rd gen.

I loved my old Xterra though, rough idle, but ran well enough. Did break a leaf spring on it though turning into a parking lot.

Wow, OP here, didn’t realize this thread was still going.

yes he got a 2019 with the 4.0
We live in south Florida so no super crazy off roading.

and to be honest, if I didn’t buy the taco, I would have probably gotten the same truck seeing that I have ‘test drive’ it for a solid 2 days on and off road.

    anyways thanks all.

Yes, our truck is rated at 270ish horsepower, but it feels like it will only give you 80hp until you floor it and are at 6k RPM.

If you bought a 2005 to early 2010 you may have a point. Want to talk rusted frames. Seem Toyota had a recall not to many years ago for the 2ng gen. Talk about towing, how is the fuel pump recall in which there is not fix yet?

Bottom line any vehicle, including Toyota have issues.

One of the biggest reason's i miss my tundra, the 3.5 has no low end. You need to get use to the gen3 engine, and drive it differently. The gen3 v6 will go fast but you need to constantly tell to. Reminds me of racing a 125 for hare scramble races.

Hope Nissan fixed the strawberry milkshake issue that comes from the tranny cooler being in the radiator. Don’t forget the fuel sending unit issue...had this issue with my ‘06.

I ditched my Frontier for a 2nd gen back in 2012. Frontier felt cheap compared to Tacoma.

In some ways the new tacoma feels cheap compared to my gen1 tundra.

That’s just a concept, no one “really” knows the design. Although I have heard somewhere a few high volume Nissan dealers knows what it will look like.

and as far as the “SMOD” that issue was taken care of post 2010. The only thing my brother said he was going to mod was the rear diff vent, because they’re prone to bust seals.

other than that, his rear end isn’t howling, tranny isn’t gear hunting, and as far as he knows, doesn’t have a fuel pump recall.

lol can you tell him and I are going back and forth. He also said he has a fully boxed frame and disc brakes all around. I told him I don’t care. Lol

I guess that depends on the tacoma model for those issues. My 2020 ac sr5 v6 auto is fine.

Yes it does depend on the model/year. I don’t have any issues with the 2020 I have. Anyways I’m watching “the last dance” on ESPN!!!

I have a friend who bought a 2006(?) Frontier double cab long bed about a year & half ago. He likes it, and it was well kept/maintained (he's a former new vehicle delivery guy so he has connections). The only other one like that I ever saw was in NYC.

No fight in the game here... I loved my 2004 Nissan SuperCharged Frontier... cool blue color too. Had it for over 8 years.. then in 2011 upgraded to a Pro 4X. I wanted a Tacoma... but price and the dealership were crap. Frontier had awesome handling On Road... but acceptable off road for what I was doing that at the time. In 2018.. on Halloween.. (Good day to buy a vehicle...) My Tacoma blows the doors off my Pro 4X now. Yes.. I put a lot more into it, Lift, skids, tires... etc. I think the Tacoma is way more capable stock.... in an off road situation with locking rear diff, crawl, and other off road modes. I know people make fun of those options.. but they work. Used it multiple times here in Colorado.. snow, mud, and dry. Metburry Gultch, Tin Cup Pass, Illinois Gultch, .. basically anywhere here in Deckers... Bottom line.... My 3rd Gen is something that I am extremely happy with and never look back and regret getting another Datsun.
