I bought my 2017 TRD OR last week used with only 9,100 miles last week. Love it! Drives great... but today it started making this noise. Anyone else hearing this? I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow so I'll report back if anyone is interested...

They changed the oil just before I bought it. Has like 900miles on the oil. It's looks brand new

I haven't done anything to the truck except put a "heritage grill" on it.

Take it in , it’s still under warranty but I’m pretty sure they will say it’s normal.

Sounds like a knock with a belt pulley problem.

I went to start it up later and the noise was gone. I'll be driving it around tomorrow so I'll keep monitoring it and soon as it starts up again, I'll take it in. I'm sure there gonna say it "normal" but I don't think so.
    We'll see...

Sounds like the self cleaning cycle for the fuel injectors . Do you hear this sound all the time at idle?

The high pitched chirping is the HPFP but not sure about that knocking sound, if it only does that at idle then it's probably the cleaning cycle.

Yeah the knocking is my main concern. To me it sounds like "valve lashing" if that's the right term. Almost like there's a loose rocker. Not too familiar with this new engine so...

    Shakerhood- what is the HPFP?
    High pressure fuel pump?

    Thanks guys!

    Just at idle...
So this engine has an ability to "self clean" the fuel system? Crazy!!!

sounds like Direct Injection and/or HPFP working normally. I wouldn't worry unless you notice obvious signs of a problem.

Nothing about that sounds normal to anyone other than Toyota.

The self cleaning sounds more like a ticking than the knocking you have in your video. That chirp sounds like the hpfp going bad tbh. Toyota hasn't been super willing to fix those for most of the guys on this board but some have had success getting the pump replaced.

I'll echo the sentiments of the others in the thread: you might have discovered the reason someone dumped a Tacoma, a brand renowned for longevity and reliability, after 9k miles. I'd press Toyota for a fix, but don't buy the "tsb is coming out soon" line. You'll be waiting years.

Knocking sounds like the injector cleaning cycle. It could be what your camera is picking up sounds a bit deeper, but the tapping is inline with injector cycling frequency and interval.

Replacing the hpfp doesn't make the whistle go away. Most have reported the replacement pump is quiet for a few hundred miles before starting again. The pump isn't failing. My whistle comes and goes depending on where I get fuel and has done it since new (15k miles now) Octane level doesn't change it, but Shell detergents cause the loudest whistle for me.

The tweety bird noises are annoying but unfortunately it isn't something they are going to fix for us. The FRS did this for years.

Yeah, it's just the injector cleaning cycle making the engine sound like it's junked.

I didn't really hear a knock as much as the same sound my truck makes only with the cheezy phone mic almost on top of it.

    Have a warranty? Keep driving!
