Last Friday I noticed a small chip in the center of the windshield. I called my insurance company and set up an appointment for the glass replacement. They use an outside company as their glass loss manager.

The chip was small enough that it could be repaired instead of having to replace the windshield. Seemed very reasonable as it was faster than having it replaced and I wouldn't have to worry about moving the scanner GPS receiver or the mini dash cam.

Guy came out Sunday and did the repair. It looked good. The tech mentioned that once in a while a repair wouldn't hold and the windshield would crack and need to be replaced.

Guess who won the "once in a while" lottery?

I went out to the truck this morning to drive to an early morning doctor's appointment and this is what I saw when I got into the truck.

If you look about 1/he way from the left end of the crack, you'll see where the original chip was.

Definitely not going repair that. :D

Called back to the glass program company and a nice young lady from Iowa set me up with an appointment Monday afternoon. I shouldn't have to leave the truck overnight, but they do need to calibrate the electronics attached to the windshield.

Out of curiosity, do they move the camera over to the new windshield, or does the windshield come with a new camera?

Not the worst thing that could happen, but I always get a little nervous when a windshield has to be replaced.

I think they move it over. Needs to be re calibrated .

The nice young lady on the phone mentioned that it needed to be calibrated. I would expect (and hope) that they are trained to do that. I don't think moving the Dash Cam Mini over should be an issue. At least I hope not. I'll remove the GPS since it's attached by velcro to the dash, not the windshield. I'll take the antenna off the hood mount as well to give them working room. None of that should be a problem.

Yea, no need to calibrate anything. Had my glass replaced by a local guy in a tiny shop down the street. Wasn't even the full OEM glass technically speaking, no calibration.

Since my comprehensive pays for it with no deductible, they can calibrate to their hearts content.

Probably just telling you something to add to you insurance bill. But like you said, whatever. Just make sure everything works.

Interestingly, not the way it works in this state. Only if you have excessive, I think three in a year, glass claims do they start to look sideways. My wife's Highlander cracked a windshield about a year ago, but other than that, it's been a few years since I had any glass work done.

*DO NOT LET THEM DISCONNECT THE SENSOR CAMERA. Sometimes is a pain to recalibrate even thru the dealership. It will recalibrate itself if you don’t disconnect it.

Maybe, but I don't know. I didn't notice it until I stopped to get gas. I definitely didn't see or hear anything to indicate that there was a problem.

Just curious, what is there to calibrate when you replace the windshield? It's just a piece of glass, no?
Do they put fancy electronic sensors in the glass nowadays? o_O

There's a camera mounted to the windshield for the Lane Departure Alert (LDA). I don't know if it does anything else, although there is some sort of modification offered here on the forum to tie it into the Head Unit so you can watch yourself drive down the road. Or something like that.

The LDA is nice, but I would have rather had the blind spot sensors. I have to do with old fashioned spot mirrors and pay attention when change lanes! ;)

Given the complaints about "weak glass" in another thread, I wasn't sure.

One thing I will say about Toyota glass based on 20 years of owning them is that they seem to get pitted fairly easily. Then again, I haven't owned an American made vehicle since 2001 so I don't know if all glass is like that.

One thing that I think is happening with all vehicles is that engineers are consumed with weight reduction in order to meet federal mileage standards. Which is why a lot of metal has been replaced by plastic over the years.

I thought that the radar built into the grill behind the Toyota logo was what controlled the anti collision system, but it might be both.
