So this is happening today! Bumper build

I would definitely go heavier than that on the mounting points IMO, I don't think you will find a bumper out there that uses anything less than 3/16" for mounting, most are 1/4". A 1" clevis does you no good if you rip it off the frame. Are you going to add a winch?

Man this is such a long process! So many different angles. You fellas that have built bumpers to look good, PROPS!!!

She's gettin there, just trying do make it perfect and do it RIGHT, cause I know if I don't I will regret it!

 

So I need your opinions and advice guys. Everything's racked up besides the top surface of the bumper. How is everyone's mounted? Cause I don't want it rubbing all over everything. Is it tucked in underneath headlights? Did you remove the bracket that the grill rests on? What did you guys do?

 

Keep the brackets. Slightly tucked under head lights. When the truck flexes it will get closer/further from the lights so leave a little bit of a gap between bumper and headlight filler plate. like 1/2" or so and remember if galvanized and or powder coated, this gap will get smaller due to increased overall thickness

 

So how many mounting points are there on yours, the 2 that mount to directly to the frame and than how many after that?

 

The mounting points from the original bumper, underneath that are 2 I believe 19mm bolts that were/are holding some frame extension pieces in. I tied in here and removed those frame extenders. Alot of companies additionally build a bracket to tie the bumper further back into the frame as well shown here. It will have a big heavy washer on the opposite side of the frame to really pinch it tight.

 

In pic, front two viewable bolts are original mounting bolts. Under that near the gusset you can see the 19mm bolt mentioned. There isnt a way to thread it in, so a big heavy washer ad nut or a squar plate with a hole in it and a nut welded to it are usualy used.

 

Cool thanks for the input man! I like how that's mounted a lot!!! Is there any mounting up top towards the headlights??? And did you delete the little black bracket that goes from headlight to headlight that the grill sits on??

no mounting points used other then what can be seen in the pic posted above. I didnt remove any brackets that the grill attaches to

 

Ya I'd rather fuck up cheap cardboard, I got the steel for free but there wasn't a whole lotta extra so I didn't wanna screw it up. In some aspects I think it woulda been easier to build it on the fly.

 

I feel yeah man, Took 3 months to build mine.

 

Did the same thing on my build 2 lowes boxes.

Damnit!!!!! I didn't even realize that was your build! I messaged you playing 20 questions when I was tossing the idea of this build around haha!!! Ya your bumper is LEGITTTTT! I dig it! Did you have to build any gussets??? And what's the little LED strip??? Where did ya get it if ya don't mind me askin

 

haha Oh yeah. We did talk a few times. The LED is from oracle lights, but I think SuperbrightLEDS.com has a cheaper on. My brother tossed it at me in the middle of the build and I integrated it in on the fly.
