So ultimately I am right. People with manuals have the same issue. Oh well I would still rather have my manual over an auto. Not that there is anything wrong with autos.

I don't. In fact, I downshifted into first at 18mph today.

The trick to smooth downshifting is you have to over-rev it beyond the desired destination RPMs just a bit (say 500 rpms) and then drop the shifter into the lower gear just as the RPMs fall to the correct spot. Don't try and force it.

Who doesnt over rev it when down shifting that is driving a manual 101 imo. I am gonna have a buddy of mine that works on transmissions drive it; I think the larger tires could be the culprit though they are only 31s so idk.

Something different about the 4x4 5-speed? My 5lug never has issues going into 1st.

It's not driver error, but that's an easy spot to place the blame if you haven't driven one. I've driven a lot of different manual transmissions, this one has trouble with 1st when you are moving at any pace. Rev matching doesn't help. Maybe there was a run of defective transmissions because I see a lot of people with the 5 speed have the same issue.

Yep I agree. There are socialist automatic drivers that think they know all about the 5spd here b/c they drove one once.

The above quote is the first post, in this thread. I just can't get past it, it is still in my head.

    "clutch it though it", WTF

Hey, the clutch should either be in or out completely. That is if you want to get any life out of your clutch.

Don't sugar coat or try to be politically correct; this guy doesn't belong in a standard shift vehicle.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
put the truck in second gear. rev it to the sky. drop the clutch..

    repeat as necessary

btw the clutch is not strong enough stock to live through many 2nd gear burnouts. So enjoy them while you can.

Buy a trailer and tow it all the time. 6spd rocks for towing and you will never hate it again :)

Usually caused by reverse powerflow . The rear tires drive the rear differential , the rear diff drives the driveshaft . The driveshaft drives the transmission output shaft . If you could disconnect the reverse powerflow from the transmission output shaft , I am sure you could grab first gear at any speed :D

First gear is synchronized. It is also the least used of all Synchro's. It also is stressed more than the others simply because the weight it has to work with during alignment of the gears. A suggestion would be to use it regularly when in neutral, clutch depressed, rolling to a stop. Use slight pressure downshifting to first under 5mph. If it doesn't go, don't force it. You should hear a slight whine while it's attempting to synchronize first. Hopefully, as it breaks in, you will have more success downshifting.

My 5 speed behaves this way, but not all the time. Usually when rolling slowly, if I let out the clutch pedal with trans in neutral, then depress the clutch pedal again, it will go into first. I think it's best to go with a lower gear since lugging the motor (slow speed, high gear) is pretty bad for it.
