See, I find this confusing. I didn't see anything for the 2016 on ARBs site and there is so much different information out there. o_O

If I had bought the SR5 4x4, the locker wouldn't be very high on my list for mods. Pound for pound and value for money, really not something I've ever had to use.

If you're into moderate to heavy recreational off-roading, it's worth every penny. Use mine all the time.

I'm a hunting guide on weekends and spend many miles on un-maintained antiquated forest service roads, logging roads, old ranch roads...often in mud and/or snow. It has helped me in the mud but I was never convinced I absolutely needed it.

I (will soon) have an SR5 2WD for 99% pavement driving.

The only exceptions (1%) will be: (A) pasture grass/gravel roads (sometimes inclined) about 5 weekends a year, and (B) an easy local boat ramp.

Because of this 99%/1% expectancy of use, I got the 2WD which saved >$3,000. However, I would love to add lockers to prevent loss of movement if just one tire spins in the wet grass or wet boat ramp. I'm in no hurry to do it, but hopefully I will find a solution around $1,000 or less.

You and I are going to be best friends now.

It is not as high on my list, but I have a bit of mud down here in the swamp.

I did just travel to Northern New Mexico.... Loved it. I need to travel to Arizona.

I thought I saw something on the Marlin crawler website. Bet they could get you in a locker of some kind. I'd like to get hooked up with a locking diff too. (WAS THAT A PUN?)

I'm basically in the same boat as you. To be perfectly honest I think the stock "Auto LSD" is going to be fine for that other 1%...

    Here's a demo of it:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IUfFdMDaW4

Yes yes, I know it's not extreme off-roading but the principle is there, it's a demonstration. Basically the ABS system watches the rear wheels and when it sees one slip, it clamps the brake down in an attempt to get the other wheel spinning, and then frees it when the other wheel does move.

I like the idea of a locker too, and I think it would be pretty neat to chop a factory e-locker into a 4x2. However, for such light offroading I haven't even had to throw on the Auto LSD, crawling around sopping wet gravel back roads.

    Figured I'd chime in.

For the trails I hit, a locker ended up being the difference between making it, and taking on damage... I took on damage. Auto LSD did nothing in the situation I was in.

Just had an ARB locker installed in the rear and went out this weekend. Oh what a difference it made. IMO, if wheeling is a hobby, at least having the rear locked is a must.

Anyhow, the ARB locker made for the Toyota 8" (rd132 I think) works fine. Just need different bearings because the stock bearings ID is too small for the locker. You need bearings that fit a previous gen 8" rear diff.

    :hattip:
