I'm about to volunteer for an IA billet in Iraq (Apr 2011)... I was just wondering who has been over there recently how is it now? I've been there before about 4 years ago down in the south. I'm gonna be there for a year this time too. I'm just wondering how things have changed. The billet is for a Plans Officer, somewhere near bagdhad, the detailer couldn't be specific on location. I'm a contracting officer... so I won't be seeing any action this time.

I'm volunteering because I want to make some extra cash, plus there isn't any worth while sea duty billets available to me. I really want to end up back in Washington state on the Stennis, but it looks like the only way thats gonna happen is if I do the IA. Theres a couple of spots opening around the time I'd get back from Iraq so what the hell... atleast its not afghanistan. Also, this will be my last time going, unless I volunteer again...

IA billet is an Individual Augmentee (IA)... basically, you go there enroute to your next command

I imagine you'll be inside the gates of whatever base you'll be at. I know of a deployment that just came back from Afghanistan and they all told me it was crazy and were getting attacked pretty often!!!

Was there in '91, then '96, then 2003, then again in 2007. It's pretty calm there now, no real worries. All of my troops there this year are actually getting good workouts done. Use the time to go to college and get in shape.

I wish I was the commander. I would carpet bomb the area and there'd be knowone there to shoot. Pull out the troops and send in the nuke. Kill em all.

I just redeployed in late January after my third year long tour. Like others have said, random incidents. It has calmed down compared to past tours. Good luck!

I was in Iraq in 2005 (Baghdad specifically) and we got attacked daily... Maybe the situation is different now.

I'd be willing to bet they will change the orders and send you to Afghanistan instead. Djibouti may be an alternate.

They might change them if the orders are originally for the Army.
