The ARB in my 8.4 axle that was set up by ECGS did leak occasionally, seemed like it did it more when it was cold (snow wheeling, etc). The ARB in my FJ axle has been bulletproof so far, and was easy to set up. Honestly that might be one of the best features of the 9.5, it is probably one of the most straightforward gear setups for those of us just getting into doing our own gears. Personally I would definitely trust the ARB over a 25 year old e-locker in who knows what condition. Or a Harrops like Monte said, although that's $$$.

Welding on new shock mounts will be a joy compared to cutting off all the 3/16" link brackets and coil buckets though, what a pain in the dick.

I've seen a few people with ARB issues, but mine was working well yesterday so it's on year 6 with zero issues.

I wouldn't get one of those Harrops given the 'feature' that they unlock when you roll backwards. Sounds terrible if you have a manual.

Is that really a thing? I never heard about that before. I thought the point of a locker was to remain "locked", lol

That was an awesome day, and one of the examples I was thinking about on ARB issues. Sorry Ryan.

They did have a bad batch of seals that I believe have all been phased out. I think Ryan's has been working ever since he got the seals replaced.

When I researched them a couple years ago, I read about issues with sporadic disengagement and issues when changing direction. Was a definite no-go for me at the time. Maybe they're better now? :notsure:

I had bought a Harrop for the front awhile back but went against installing it.

I went Harrop due to zero maintenance needed; over time ARB needs their seal replaced and I didn't want to bother taking apart a front diff after finding out the hard way when it wouldn't engage.

I'll go Harrop on the next vehicle I decide to modify.

I read no such thing and straight from ECGS, they've never had a Harrop come back, ever.

They've had ARBs sent back, or diffs with an ARB.

I'm all for cry once and buy once, which is why I went Harrop.

But for the next vehicle, we'll see what's available.

Might be an older Yota solid axle or Land Cruiser.

Post #20 talks about if it ever gets bound up and the axle shaft you have to cut it out.

It's a saftetly feature to keep axles from breaking.

It only does it for a very small rotation and only when a change in direction happens.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nT_H6rpd-Ck

Doesn't seem to be an issue I think. I'd run one in a heart beat.

Doesn't seem to be a big issue to me. It's just to keep axle bind from happening and to save your axle. I doubt it would be a big issue.

I've always kind of thought the same about the U-bolt flips. I would think that's a good contender to some of these leaking axles at the perches.
Compared to the stock U-bolt config with the bottom bracket that cradles the whole axle, there's a lot more of a contact patch with the axle tube than just two U-bolts.

I can't think of anyone with a stock U-bolt setup that's had a leak from the same places

It still leaks sometimes, but I think it stays engaged. If I did it again I'd go with something else. Could be an issue with quality control at ECGS.

    Interesting observation.

I think this video describes what Brett is talking about. https://youtu.be/1nYZo--7Xh4

Seems it's an "If" scenario not a "It happened" scenario. Mostly that thread seems to discuss the proper way to pull the axle shafts and the risks of not doing so correctly. :notsure: Doesn't seem like it's enough of a reason to go ARB vs the electric locker it already has in place.

You might have a point there, I definitely feel like my axle housing looked slightly deformed.
