So you push your 1st gen offroad - what cracks next?

I'd buy that clamp but I'm not confident it would fit being I copied my frame side piece off already bent parts.


At some point though, I need to decide how much effort is worth putting in to keeping this IFS going...

 

IFS 4 LYFE.

 

I know I certainly prefer it... I do think it might be a worthy project to transplant second gen IFS though for durability, it's no secret ours is fairly dinky.

 

Just buy a 2nd gen.

 

I'm not a big fan of them otherwise, they're a bit too bloated looking, like a dog whos face has been stung by a bee

 

The only thing I cannot find a solution for is the steering rack. With a light foot and smart brain I haven't ever bent tie rods crawling and only snapped one CV.

 

I think we could retrofit a different rack, there's actually plenty of room. But would need to rework that x-member for mounting since nothing really mounts like ours.

 

Could probably figure a way to fit a double ended ram back there for a full hydro setup which woudl be cool. Not really for a road rig though. Seen a 2nd gen guy do that on his. but their rack sits in front of the suspension

 

I think that would fit, technically it's legal too, nothing stipulating mechanical connection to steering. But I think bending tie rods might become a problem quickly haha

 

Yea lots of room back there compared to the 2nd gen where you have to slide it into that pocket of the subframe.
For tie rods, I figure you would just go to heim steering at that point

 

I always wondered about the first gen tundra racks especially in a long travel application where you would have the extra width already. It mounts similarly.

I don't think it's the strength improvement because I'm pretty sure it is just our rack but 3 in longer

 

from my knowledge, the 1st gen tundra has basically the same front suspension and drivetrain as the 1st gen taco. With the exception of stuff just being longer in some places for the vehicle width difference.
Same size front differential as well.

 

Wonder if anyone has ever tried to put tundra control arms on a Tacoma, or if there's a big enough difference to matter. Like the the titan to frontier swap.

 

Good question. I'd guess that the pivot spacing is maybe wider.

What are you guys breaking in the rack? and at what frequency?

Every time (*almost* every time) I thought I wrecked a rack, it was my TRI's.

The one time it was actually the rack, the bar bent enough it wouldn't seal/couldn't slide thru the housing well.

 

Having changed both, can confirm just longer and definitely not any stronger. Tie rods on the Tundra are simply longer as well and no extra strength at all.
