70 in 3rd?! Holy rippums batman, that's high in the band!
35s and 4.88, I run cruise at what my speedo says is 60-65 (who knows my actual warp speed don't care) and in 5th. But not up a hill or mountain for sure.

The owner's manual says you can go up to 81 in 3rd. Never done it myself, though.

It’s geared for the tires it comes with. Change the tires, change the gearing. What’s the big deal? Hell, I live in a hilly area and contemplated regearing just for that alone, one size doesn’t have to fit all.

I've got a 4speed auto dbcb 4wd 2.7 with just about every heavy item you can put on Tacoma. Fully built truck. I have the truck Toyota never made in a 4cyl because it would be too heavy lol. 285 75 16 wildpeak MT which are 68lbs a piece. Truck is regeared to 5.29's. I run about 2700 rpm at 65 and 3000 at 75. On flat ground i can use cruise but going up any grades above 10* it starts to struggle. Usally throw it into 3rd and 2nd if its a super steep hill. Low range off-road i can go up anything i want lol. Its a trade off. That being said probably gonna put some 285 75 17's on it and that's going to be it as far as tire size. I couldn't image putting any larger cause this thing wouldn't be able to handle it. Mines manageable right now.

Does anyone know what the biggest tire size one could fit on a 2018 TRD OR with stock 16" wheel rims so that the tires did not rub and original gears were used ?

For example, if we replaced our tires, whats the biggest size we could go keeping everything else stock ?

The same answer you'd get from the helpful link Bob  sent you in your welcome messages, on the horrid :puke: TW FB :duh: page, or by searching "what's the biggest tire blah blah blah": the magic answer is 265/75/16. Requires no extra gearing (maybe) and no rubbing (maybe). No truck is created equal, sorry, they aren't all clones. I've even heard the 3rd gen folk can run 255/85/16 without rubbing, they must not leave gravel roads at worst.

I’m happy I ran into this thread. I have a 2021 DCSB 2.7L that I’m currently running 265/70/17s on but plan on going up to 285/70/17s sometime soon and was wondering if I’d need to regear. Sounds like I’ll be just fine with my stock gears then, even with the added weight. I can get about 20mpg right now with highway driving even with all my gear, rtt, and sliders on the truck.

I appreciate that. Yea I’m getting my headstrong aal and rear extended 5100s installed first week of March to fix my sag and then in april going for the eibach Coilovers 2.0 and spc UCAs. Then it’ll be the 285s after that. I usually stick to C rated.

Hey guys, I'm not sure I should be concerned, but I'm just covering all my bases.
    I have a 2.7l auto with 4.10 gears, I am considering going to 255/70/r16 with 16x8.
Any room for concern or am i just being irrational? It would be mostly highway miles.

They make different rear axle ratios for a reason. I think it really depends on where you’re willing to compromise since any gain in torque at the wheels has a trade off of higher rpms in every gear. To get an idea how much check out the tire size calculator thread. https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc

That's slightly smaller in diameter than stock so you should be fine.

A lot of people like to complain about the 2.7 but after owning one since 2012 I’d have to say it’s really not that bad. I’ve done many “overland” style trips and many “wheeling” trips and the truck has always done what I’ve asked of it. Swapping out to 4.88 gears was a huge improvement in drivability and fuel milage with 285/75-16 mud tires over stock gearing, loaded up for a cross country trip averaging 16-17 mpg if I keep it my speed between 70-75. Any faster than that and it plummets. Best tip I can give you as far as the 2.7 goes is keep the weight down, in my experience that’s seem to have effected drivability and mpg over tire size and aerodynamics for sure. That’s tough for me because my truck is armored up for the more difficult trails but the biggest thing is not to go full overlander and carry the contents of your house on a trip. Do a few trips to figure out what you actually really need to bring with you and leave the rest behind

But compare that price to the extra amount of fuel used/burnt turning bigger tires on smaller gearing over a year or 2.

The price of your sanity to actually merge off an incline ramp onto an interstate without being in 3rd gear, or leave from a stop sign/light like any other vehicle on the road and not ride the clutch for 100' = priceless

    This, all of this!

I'm guilty of the weight thing myself. Also armored decently well, still need a trans skid. Turning 315/75 r16 on 3rd gen OR wheels, with 4.88s is pretty damn close to stock 4.10 and a 245 or 265 tire. I've also got a snorkel, magnaflow exhaust, and LCE header; soon to install a tooter intake spacer, and I feel those all help with more pep and low end grunt.
I carry a fair amount of tools in the bed box daily because you never know what could go wrong. After a lift, a factory jack is useless and a floor jack is cumbersome, so I've got a highlift. Breaker bar, torque wrench, 1/2" ratchet and sockets from 10mm to 36mm, box wrenches, 2-3 different pliers and vice-grips, electrical repair kit, hammer(s) :D, ratchet straps, one gallon of cold juice, couple qts of oil, etc., etc.....

The point is, general weight kills our trucks more than anything, that's just flat out true with any truck in any configuration. The tires and giant wheel well openings don't help after a front bumper. Adding "overlander" IG gear on your roof or a bed rack is detrimental to any aerodynamics still left and makes you at risk for rollover in a crosswind. Camp in a ground tent, buy the instant coffee pouches or bags and learn how to boil water, pack one skillet and one small pot, don't try and cook for an army.
K.I.S.S. I'm down to one smallish Rubbermaid box, my tent, a tarp, sleeping bag, air mattress w/ inverter and pump, camp stove, and I'm ready to drink beer in the woods with internet strangers.
