I think he's asking if the suppressor is pinned to the barrel. Any suppressor for a firearm will require a tax stamp. Suppressors are legal federally without a tax stamp on airguns (ex. Gamo Whisper series) and black powder (ex. Silencer Maxim 50) provided they are not detachable as those two types of guns are not classified by the feds as firearms; some of your commie states do classify them as firearms and thus you apparently can't get them or require a stamp (see your individual state for specific laws).

As for avoiding paying for two stamps there are basically two ways to go- you get an integrally suppressed model with an overall length of 16" (18" on shotguns) or you get a barrel with a built in, non-detachable sleeve that covers the suppressor and brings the overall length of the barrel to the legal length. An example of the first would be the new Ruger Silent-SR while an example of the second would be the Tactical Solutions SB-X. Both of those are for Ruger 10/22s but there are similar options for some other guns. Obviously when you're paying a lot of money (and waiting, and waiting) for a suppressor it's much nicer to be able to use it on multiple firearms but these are options. The integrally suppressed guns do tend to be a bit quieter though. On a similar note, single shots, lever guns, pumps and bolt actions will be quieter than semi autos.

When you start talking about adding a muzzle device to a barrel to bring it up to legal length, i.e. 14.5"/14.7"---> 16" AR barrels, the device must be permanently attached. The ATF recognizes three methods- blind pinning, welding or high temp solder (not your couple hundred degree electrical solder). Make sure that whatever device you choose does indeed bring it up to length; for example, a standard A2 flash hider does not bring a 14.7" barrel to 16", it's close but you need an extended length version.

When considering adding a suppressor to an AK variant you need to have the barrel checked for concentrancy- the bore is not concentric in the barrel of some AKs. A baffle strike or worse can destroy your expensive can. All firearms and suppressors should be checked before being fired as a combo for the first time but it's mainly been some of the AKs where this has been seen.

Always wear your shooting glasses but it's especially important with suppressed guns, more so still with guns like the AR, as you will get more crap blowing back. Adding a charging handle such as the Gas Buster or Bravo Co Gunfighter which have a raised portion on top helps prevent gasses from escaping in your face. The old school version of this was to run a bead of RTV on top of your charging handle. Speaking of safety, you should still wear your hearing protection with pretty much anything other than .22 subsonics. It may not sound loud but certain frequencies and sharp cracks are worse on your hearing- and hearing aids suck according to my dad.

There are a lot of good products out there these days but some of them are getting dated and some just aren't worth the money. Do your research.

I have a SilencerCo Omega I got in 2017 for my RPR in 6.5CM. Submitted my paperwork early Jan 2017 and got the tax stamp mid-Sept 2017. Hopefully it’s not taking as long these days. Basically paid my money for the can, filed the paperwork, and waiting it out while it sat in “jail” for 9 months. I only did one conjugal visit during that time...LOL.

Personally I like shooting the RPR with the can on it, but for some reason cans have fallen out of favor with many of the other shooters at my local PRS match. I’m using the QD mount with the ASR threaded comp that came with the can, but one of these days I need to do some testing to see if there is any difference going direct-thread.

I think my next can is going to be for my .22LR to wack critters on my property.

I'm curious how the 6.5CM sounds when suppressed, I just built an AR10 in 6.5 CM and will be able to shoot it the end of next month.

I was listening to the bear arms podcast several weeks ago and they were saying that brakes seem to be more effective for recoil than cans.

Creedmoor shines when you're able to Velocity at it at once. Due to this it doesn't suppress very well just like other two to three and five five six rounds. In most cases it won't be here safe but it will also help tighten your groups a little bit and increase repeatability. Just don't think it's going to be whisper-quiet or even here safe for that matter.

I'm definitely not expecting whisper quiet, I estimate it will be about the same as my 6.8 SPC.

IMO it’s only semi-hearing safe to shoot without ear pro if under a cover. But out in the open it’s fine without. However I usually have my in-ear hearing protection on during matches because of the other shooters banging away, many of whom are not running suppressed.

Good, concise info. I didn't see anything concerning transportation of a suppressor (for people's assurances) or a disclaimer of legal advice

    Thanks!
I’ll create a post this evening about the transportation of suppressors/SBR’s.
    Good point on the disclaimer

Hopefully I’ll be able to post up a range review on a SBR (4.75” barrel) AR9 with the Optimus on it next week.
I just got the thread adapter and piston sleeve today.

No range review for the AR-9 because I can't find my mag block adapter :annoyed::facepalm: And I'm also dealing with this little incident.

I do plan on adding a detailed trust Vs individual post as well as detailing what's involved with the Silencershop Single Shot trust.

I have an Omega 9k and love it. When I shoot 124gr 9mm it’s dead quite. I highly recommend / have not tested it with a 300 Blackout Upper yet.

This looks like a great option that’s pretty new to the market (as far as I’m aware), the performance of the 300 BLK with wipes is astonishing.

Also got a 12.5" barrel in 6.8SPC to test with the Optimus, super excited to use it as my deer rifle, I really like how the suppressor starts where the hand guard ends.

Hope all is well with the accident!

I must say that I am very interested to hear what you have to say about the Single Shot Trust. I have a dealer within a half hour drive that has the “kiosk” and it sounds like pretty simple process.

I’m finally in a position to purchase my first suppressor and out of all the research I’ve done, this thread has been about the most helpful source I’ve found. Thanks!

Thanks! yep, everything has been taken care of.

I'm a big fan of the Single Shot trust, while yes it it a lot of paperwork to carry If you have multiple items (therefore multiple trusts) I keep all of my paperwork in my safe, I keep a photocopy of the approved Form 4 in my range bag, and for my SBR AR's I keep a copy of the SBR tax stamp and suppressor tax stamp in the pistol grip, I also keep complete photo scans of all of my forms in the Ibooks portion of my iPhone, so physical space isn't a concern, and the digital space is fairly small. If 41P (F?) hadn't passed then I believe that a standard trust would be the superior route, however I don't want to have to collect 15 sets of fingerprints for everyone on my "standard" trust.
If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

Thanks, I'm glad it's been helpful, I've been terrible at adding to it, I need to set aside some more time for it.

I haven't been to the range in 6 months.... I really need to go.

In suppressor related news my cousin called today and he and his wife are looking at purchasing their first suppressor, he hasn't finished his research yet but he's looking at the Griffin Revolution 9.

Silencerco has a prototype modular can (sounds like it should be similar to the Optimus) that was leaked, it sounds interesting.
Griffin armament released a 30SD-K, not 100% sure of the specs but I believe length is around 5.8”, I’m a little disappointed it uses the gate-lok instead of taper mount but oh well.
