If I could make a suggestion (not sure if it was referred to in the links) but if you're interested in buying one save $200 in excise taxes and buy the complete upper and complete lower separately. Buy them from the same dealer online if you choose. But for whatever reason the "man" charges extra for a completed rifle when you can buy them separately and just mate them together.

If you ever clean your rifle you'll have to take it apart at some time so why not buy in two parts and save a buck. I recommend buying from BCM or Rainier Arms.

If you're not looking for a particular brand, but want a tier 1 rifle I also recommend LMT (Lewis Machine and Tool). Those who know AR platforms know LMT. They're just as good as Colt and Noveske just not the price. I'm also hearing BCM rifles are hard to beat these days too.

Having shot one and owned one for years you can hardly do better than LMT. Save a buck on the rifle which will leave you some money for a rail or optic!

    Just my thought.

I've never used one. I've built 3 lowers and never saw the need.

    Ancient Chinese secret.

Probably NOT recommended by armorers;) but I take large adjustable pliers and wrap them in duct tape and tighten as much as I can without scratching anything and then I take a flat-head screwdriver and put it in the slots and give a whack with the hammer once in each slot. I've not ever had a problem and I've never scuffed anything up.:)

I know nothing about ARs, but plan on buying one after replacing my shotgun. In Cabela's yesterday, I saw a no-frills model (guessing a 16" barrel) for $499. Is it possible that's a decent rifle? I've had a couple of Mini-14s that I couldn't shoot for sh*t, even with my homebrew reloads, but my wife would like to own a decent black rifle, and I have no desire for an SKS (had one) or AK.
