95 taco here's the current A-school list and the estimated wait times for classes to start. A lot of non-rates I know and work with now have been in for 2 yrs+ and haven't had the chance to go to a school yet.

    http://www.uscg.mil/epm/docs/a-schoollist.pdf

Just to give you an idea you wouldn't be headed for a school for a minimum of 1 1/2 - 2 yrs. A lot more goes into you becoming a ME3 than just going to school and graduating. Now it is a prerequisite to get your EPME test done before school. Just make sure you do your homework before signing the dotted line. Have any questions about the non rate life shoot me a PM

I've been thinking about joining for a little while now. Haven't seen a recruiter in person yet because the closest one is 5 hours away but I've talked to them on the phone. Most interested in the Maritime enforcement specialist. Anybody in here doing that? I'll be graduating highschool in about a month but I have 30 hours of college credit need to talk to a recruiter if that will help much to qualify me for OCS. The running in boot camp is going to be the worst part for me. (Offensive linemen don't run much) even if I wanted to go to college the new GI Bill would let me go after 3 years so that's always a plus. My buddy just got out of his schooling for the Navy so he's been trying to persuade me to do that but CG is definitely my first choice. Thanks for any comments

Coast guard is a good gig man. As far as OCS goes it is a pretty competitive process and it requires a degree. The ME rating primarily is involved in the law enforcement side of the coast guard. Best thing to do is talk to a recruiter and get the ball rolling. You can always back out if you don't think it's for you. And if you do make the decision to join just keep an open mind to what you would want to do. It's better to see the coast guard from the inside before being set on a rate. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Garrett. I called the recruiter I have talked to before today but no answer I filled out the packet they sent me. I will definitely get in touch with him and set up a meeting. (Nola trip soon) :woot: as far as the rate i will for sure keep an open mind. Thanks

    Great thread!

As with previous post, I'm happy to answer questions regarding the active duty and reserve side. I'm a reserve MST (marine science technician), out of Charleston with previous active duty cutter time.
It seems there are plenty of talented folks interested in OCS, post college. As someone that had this route on their mind, I encourage you to enlist and put in your package after several years of working in the fleet. USCG OCS is highly competitive and BS/BA degrees are dime a dozen now, your chances of getting picked up as prior enlisted are much higher than non-enlisted. Second, consider the USCG Reserves, OCS is three weeks compared to active duty 17 weeks. Lots of opportunity if you're willing to be flexible.
Small tips and advice: remember who you're working for in the end. It's an awesome branch, with outstanding people; take care of your shipmates; pick your rate-pick your fate.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) will bestow an honor on the U.S. Coast Guard at a special ceremony in San Diego this week, dedicating a Forever Stamp to the branch of the Armed Forces.

The stamp dedication is set to take place Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Coast Guard Hangar in downtown San Diego. The stamp – which depicts the Coast Guard’s cutter Eagle, a three-masted sailing ship known as “America’s Tall Ship,” and a MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter – honors the role of the U.S. Coast Guard in protecting the security of our nation.
