Thread is six years old as of yesterday. Hard to believe it's been that long.

I've been an alcoholic for 9 years...although I've been drinking since I was 14 in some capacity or another.

For a while, I was highly functioning.

Then, 4 years ago, I lost my great-grandmother, grandfather, and father in a month and a half span.

The latter two were not expected to pass so quickly.

    It ripped me to shreds.

I went into a tailspin. I won't go into the details of my drinking habits at this point, but suffice to say that it was bad.

The week after July 4th of this year, I went on 3-week binge. At the time, I didn't understand why but as a result of it I lost my job. I know the "why" now, but that's for another time.

    That was my bottom.

And I knew that I needed help.

I had tried countless times to quit on my own...but for me, it was impossible.

So I finally sought real help. Got enrolled with the VA and started a rehab program along with other supplemental help. AA starts tomorrow.

    This shit sucks.

    But it is necessary.

And the tools to deal with it keep building. I started reading this thread long before I sought treatment...it has been a tool in of itself.

And I will be active here.

Good for you brother! We all have our particular struggles.

I was 3 yrs clean on sept 19th. And I look forward to 4yrs. I still have my struggles, but not being doped up on opiates every day has been amazing for me. Life improves! Doesn't mean you wont have bad times. Just means that you know you can handle them. Not everyone will like you, not everyone will accept you, but where I have found happiness is in getting to know myself again. Not basing my worth on anyones evaluation of me. Cuz hey! You, me, and others in this thread have a daily battle that we succeed in every day we dont use.

So to be "Frank" Fuck the haters, fuck the people who would put you down for what you have been through, they haven't walked your path and have no power over us!

    Stick to it!

I'm glad I got to read your story before it got edited. You have nothing to be ashamed of. We can't keep tripping on the past in our lives. Today is what we have, we aren't promised tomorrow and we can't go back to yesterday! Congratulations on your sobriety! Stay strong in the Faith!!!
