Finally got professional help! Shit ton of meds, intensive outpatient program and therapy style shit going on! Been completely sober a little over a week but I’ve only drank 3 times in the last month after shit got bad again on my last quit on my own attempt. So overall huge progress!

    Progress, not perfection.

Take any help that's out there is my advice..more tools in the toolbox is always wise

It's all a process my friend. But you've done the hard part in recognizing there is a problem. Many people never get to that stage. Without trying to sound cliche, there is a light at the end of this tunnel. You just have to follow the tracks. You are not alone in this.

100 days for me today. Delirium was my jumping off point. I can’t ever risk experiencing that again.

    Congrats!

I just remember blacking out in the middle of a restaurant and my head hit the floor so hard that it snapped me out of it for about 5 secs. I remember all of these people looking at me and me thinking "damn that hurt" and then "how did I get here?". The rest of the night got worse.

    The Journey.. So Far

I’ve been in and out of this thread for years… This struggle has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done. They say it will be but I’ve never believed it. I never thought it possible to get this far after each and every failure but I’m now just past 90 days. My longest length of sobriety in nearly 23 years.

For me, getting out of my own way and putting down ego and pride has been the solution. Getting professional help, IOP, MAT, Therapy, Mutual Aid, and peer support to gather tools that I can utilize and people to reach out to during times of urges and cravings instead of trying to white knuckle through it with willpower and brute force cause MAN!

The amount of work and focus needed has changed me as a person and I see the people in the world that struggle with this disease so much differently.

The mental health aspect of this disease is a key factor that when trying to power through sobriety alone is a devastating stopgap. I’ve made a number of good friends through my recovery groups, some of which still struggle and I believe a large part of it is due to not focusing on their mental well-being as well as their sobriety.

Recovery isn’t just about stopping the use, but facing the traumas in your life that spark the flame face on.

I’ve got a long way to go and I will struggle every day. It is possible though and I never really understood when people said “If I can do it, you can do it!” Until now. Before I’d just call bullshit and maybe get a bit angry, they don’t know me! No, they don’t… but they know the disease, and they are right!

So if you’re struggling, be honest, let go of the pride, step aside and let people help! The community is one of the strongest, boldest, bravest, compassionate, and understanding group of people you’ll ever meet!

Sounds like you’re on your way Brother :yay: Just a couple things to keep in mind on the journey…..Be good to yourself. Stop & smell the flowers so to speak. “The Book” refers to “wearing life like a loose garment”. I never knew what that meant until the disease started to take the very essence of who I was away after it had taken everything else. Yeah, life’s just a temporary condition so let’s make the best of it. My best thinkin’ got me here but now that I’ve turned that part over, things got better. So much better I wake up mumbling I don’t deserve this.
    Good on you, Man!
Just one other thing. Should you decide to take your Will back. Things haven’t gotten any better out there. The Alcohol will become far more Toxic to your system & you’ll be back even lower in no time flat. Just heard that from a guy who had 23 years & figured he was “cured”. One day a time is all WE got. Enjoy the journey. Good things happen here.

Thanks for sharing. That isn't always easy though it tends to help. Helping others helped me get through. I can't hardly relate to your experiences, only the substance abuse.
Going on 12yrs sober all I can say is keeping busy and avoiding activities that involved my old habits were a must. Find new activities. Life's too short to be doing the same crap all the time anyhow.
Keep it up and just remember you're not alone.
    Huge CONGRATULATIONS!

Explore new things or revisit the older (in some ways). I got back into working on and riding bikes, which I've loved since I was a little kid.

You are exactly correct with this statement. There are many reasons why I did the things I did. But being honest with myself wasn't one of those things. Keep up the good work my friend!
