Got 20 on April 19th 2024 ODAAT. I have some challenges to navigate with my 17.5 year old dachshund (Simon) and caregiving my 90 year mom, but I'm right where I'm suppose to be. Grateful for my sober life today. Unity, Service, Recovery.

I found this post, again, this morning, I don't know why or how, I wasn't searching for it, intentionally. As I was reading through it again, I realized I read it before long time ago and I 'liked' the post, but I kept reading this first post. HolyMoley. Glad you made it through that time, glad you posted it, glad I read it, again, this morning. Thank you.:hattip:

It's hard to believe that I made that post over 11 years ago and it's still having an impact. I moved to Colorado back in May of last year and it is such a nice change of pace. Plus getting out of the state that I was in helped. There was nothing to do there. Now I'm 15mins from any hiking trail I could want to go on. That in itself makes life better. Plus just being in the mountains changes everything (for me). I find great solitude up here.

Things are really good. She is in her second year of teaching and doing really good with it. She is still sober. She don't have any urge to change that either. With her sobriety, our relationship is really good. We actually bought a home a couple months back. Another month and she will hit another year milestone. I try not to put much thought into it but I fear that something will trigger her to revert back.

Only day that matters is Today. Milestones are kinda like jewelry. Nice to look at but what really shines is the feeling inside. Big congrats on successfully journey so far.

What a blessing brother, so awesome to hear that. Keep doin what you've been doing to get you guys there. A Higher Power and a spiritual seeking is all that's required to stay the course. At one point in my own sobriety, the blessings started to outweigh the urges. Praise God He is doing for me what i cant do for myself and letting put in the work for the things i can.
Amen. That's it! A daily reprieve, CONTINGENT on the maintenance of my spiritual condition. Such an awesome way of living. Gratitude ☝

    Morning everyone!

Reading through some of these posts and I’m happy for you all❤️

I have a question if anyone feels comfortable answering.

Has anyone gotten sober without working the program and turned out living a Happy and healthy life?

    Yes.

I only saw this thread because you posted and it brought it to the front page. I've been sober for 1044 days and did it on my own.

In a situation with my hubbs. Long story.

If you don’t mind me asking, do you believe in higher power and did that help you through?

    Yes and Yes.
No AA here and we’re doing pretty good. You can asked her! :D

I see it in two different ways: faith-based and science-based.

Faith-based stuff just never clicked for me. I don’t really vibe with the idea of a deity or anything like that. But I totally get that a lot of people find their own versions of a higher power, sometimes without even realizing it. For me, a higher power is anything that feels bigger than myself, and that’s super personal—everyone can interpret it in their own way.

For my journey, I leaned into the science side of things. I came to realize that my higher power is my ability to make choices. I made the decision to stop and really dig into my past, where I’d shoved a lot of my feelings away. Doing that helped me figure out why I was making certain choices—both the times I used and the times I didn’t. This self-reflection has been huge for my recovery, because it shifted my mindset from thinking my actions were controlled by something outside of me to realizing I actually have the power to choose.

Working on my mental health with tools like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and SMART Recovery has been a game-changer. These approaches have helped me understand myself better and develop practical skills to tackle my challenges.

Now, this whole understanding has really changed how I live my daily life and make decisions. I feel more in control and empowered because I know my choices matter. This journey of figuring myself out has not only helped me recover but has also given me a fresh outlook on life.
