    Well... it is a 2 day long race and they finish 1000 miles south of where they start... so it helps to not loose 2 weeks of work istead of just one.

    For the racers, it isn't a problem, the un paid pit teams and spectators is another issue.... and whenever the race is 800 + miles or goes to La Paz, it starts on a Thursday. The Baja 500 is on a Friday and only the San Felipe 250 is raced on Saturday only.
