I'd remove the plastic and etch the VIN on the metal (if it isn't already). Odds are nobody will think to look there.

You know how you open your drivers door, dome light turns on by the button switch in the door jam. So basically if your car alarm is armed and you opened the door, alarm go off. Well, add that door switch thingy behind your tailgate so when you open the tailgate, alarm goes off. Could add a switch to disable button switch too.

That's a great idea, but the tailgate takes less than 1 min to remove. By the time you get to your alarm sounding truck, those guys will be gone. BTW, the lock on your tailgate is not 100% secure either.

I took my new one apart and found no Vin's, however this is probably because the new tailgate was not installed on the truck from the factory. But I have yet to see anyone confirm that VIN's are etched into the tailgate. Anyone with an original tailgate should open it up and inspect.

I ended up using a sharpie to mark my VIN inside the tailgate. I also added some hidden stickers inside it.

Ultimately, I think a tracking device might be the best solution to this. The tricky part with tracking is making sure the trackers signal can penetrate through the metal and plastic on the tailgate. There are so many options out on the market, I don't mind picking up a few and testing them, but I may need some help to verify my tests results.

What if you have loud alarm and the clamp? How long does the clamp slow them down, plus tailgate is locked...on the 3rd gen sr5?

I'm waiting for a clamp, but all it takes is a powered screw driver to pop those off.

@LuckyToy there are some threads on this forum where people add washers and different mods to prevent tailgate theft. Although they are good, all they really do is slow down the perps.

Like we all know, perps adapt and we have to stay one if not many steps ahead of them to beat them.
