To me it just makes sense. A freeway is a thing, like a couch or a car. I don't say 'I'm going to take car to store'...I say I'm going to take 'the' car to 'the' store. Without 'the' it just sounds weird.

There's probably a good argument for it being the other way too, it's really just what we're used to. Like how after I lived in Texas for ~10 years I finally picked up on saying 'y'all', then moved back to CA and everyone looked at me like I was crazy when I said it.

and god forbid you call a soda 'pop' out here, people lose their minds

Most people outside CA say "take I-x, or Highway x, or interstate x" which makes sense to me too. I don't think either way is wrong or right.

It was Quicksand w/ wheels. I haven't seen a White Pro on the base though. You on March too?

He does have a good point though about how we don't do it with all streets. I never say I'm going to "THE" Sepulveda Blvd, I mean that would just sound crazy lol.

I guess there's really no sense to it at all

Best way I can rationalize it is, when you use numbers just as numbers, they're qualitative. But when you're referencing the freeways, it's a noun. thus the need for a "the" before the highways.

Regular street names are innately defining, so no need to use a "the" to reinforce specificity.

but that's just a bunch of pseudo-rationalization from my mind

I can get on board with that, the justification has come full circle and we are right again!

    Mods? Yes, oh yes..
We also measure driving distances in time, "dude" can be used for an entire conversation and we speak quickly because it's more useful. Least Coast can stay in the slow lane, California is going places. haha

I'm usually on a motorcycle, so picture taking gets tricky.

Actually many of us still use the names. But some like the San Gabriel that came along after numbers were used aren't familiar as folks have heard 605 for so long. All freeways have names. Some actually have several depending on the area and direction. As a result we have a mixed nomenclature of names and numbers. Listen to traffic reporters and they of ten mix the names/numbers.

Want to really confuse newbies to California. Use a name like Artesia and "The" Artesia. One's a street name the other a freeway and run parallel. at some points.

See it's direction like these that confuse newbies. I'd have just taken the 805 to the 8. Probably would have been shorter.

the real problem is he didnt say which way on 94. east goes to Lemon Grove and Coops, west goes right back to 5, so why would he do that?

Nope, to go west on 94 you would need to take 15 as well
