What's gonna happen? Someone calls the cops and says "a car I can't identify had bright lights on for a second then turned them off when they saw me"?

I'm sure the police will get right on that important case

Considering a member here in fairfax got pulled over for not having a light cover on his light bar above his front bumper I wouldn't chance it. Over where you are that would make sense, but over in the fairfax Alexandria cops got nothing to do as it is.

I dont run a front tag or covers on my lights, and ive never been pulled over for them. Knock on wood. But i also dont think its a first offense. You have to be doing something else wrong, and then they can get you for it.

I thought that too, guy was driving to go on the highway. Cop was doing speed checks and then he drives by going the speed limit. Cop turns on his lights, burns a 180 just to give him a ticket for no light cover. Again cops over here have jack shit to do. He didn't even know they could pull you over either as a main offense without a cover. Pretty sure he bought a cover to win it in court.

I have seen jeeps and lifted full size trucks running 10" or bigger light bars in the middle of traffic. Blinding people all day long. I hope they get pulled over.

Pretty rare. It really depends on the officer. Most police officer's really aren't going to care unless you have it on with oncoming traffic. I'll chance it to run into that one officer who wants to do something about it. Even then, I can't complain because what I'm doing is illegal; technically any modification to your vehicle in VA is illegal.

Also, cops in the NoVa region typically do have "jack shit" to do. Pretty sure there was just a shooting in Alexandria involving a Congressman, a murder of a teenage girl in Herndon, child porn arrest as well as a suspected Chinese "spy" in Loudoun. Just because you think they're running speed traps or something "dumb" doesn't mean they aren't responding to calls for service all day long. 95% of calls that police respond to, they don't go lights or sirens, so they are most likely going somewhere if they're out driving around.

I will give you that there have been some decent headlines recently, but do you drive through the alexandria/fairfax area? I used to live in fairfax and went to high school there...yea they really dont do shit besides bust kids for weed or camp out on speed traps. Sure the occasional thing happens, but the majority of the time they are just waiting for something to happen. Now, if you were to talk about a high crime rate like...newport news/norfolk/va beach area where I went to college...those dudes have some stuff to do. Hell I think the newport news swat team has broken records for sniper kills in certain situations.

I got a few friends who work up here in both PD and sheriffs, trust me man, they aint got much going on in the fairfax side.

Yes I do drive through a lot. I have friends in LE around here as well. Never said they were even close to D.C./Balto/etc but they do respond to some decent calls. Been on some myself on the fire side.

Just saying most of them usually aren't looking to bust some guy with no light covers and high five at the station later. I'll take my chances with actually running into that one officer and with my fire plate.

Im trying to recall, but I believe the guy I am talking about might be crunchy. I thought I remember him being a first responder...figured if they pulled him, then I likely dont have a shot in hell. Do what you want man, just I have seen cops pull people over for enough stuff to not instigate things. Then again, my lights are more than sufficient on the road as well.

It did happen again tonight, same thing. Three minutes after I start the truck, they work fine.

Pretty sure they've never had to "warm up" in the past but it seems like this is the case? Not a bulb issue I'm assuming since it's both bulbs going out.

The only warming up i have ever noticed is when first turning on the projectors they are a bit dim. But within about 5 sec or so, they are at full brightness. So i dont think thats the issue. Could it be the controller going bad and doesnt want to send the signal to flip the highs on?

If you want to test with another controller, you can borrow mine. I have it out of the truck right now since i need to repair the broken shroud. We could hook it up temporarily just to see if the issue goes away.

Edit: @memario1214 what do you recommend to secure an fxr shroud to the projector. Whatever adhesive was on there failed and need to open the headlight and fix it. Would jb weld work?

If I had to bet, you might have a worn out wire connection from maybe a bent wire over time for it to go away and then come back on? If not, have you installed anything in your truck lately that you might of had to deal with your lights at all? One time a small bolt had a grounding for one of my lights and it took me a day to realize that was the culprit with mine.

Next guess would be the controller as well as the ballasts seem to work and energize the lights, but have an issue getting that energy to the bulbs from the ballasts.

Yeah the dimness right on turn-on is complete normal. Right upon turning the lights on the ballasts provide a short, strong burst of voltage that ionises the gas and makes the arc. If there was a flat maintenance voltage sent to the bulbs nothing would happen. You may have noticed this when you turn the lights on your ballasts will buzz loudly at the beginning and then as they move down to a maintenance voltage they quiet down. I remember that my first set of Morimotos used to take about twice the amount of time to warm up as my current ones, which still aren't even the most current gen. My ebay specials I had once upon a time would take like 45 seconds to warm up.

As for mounting the shroud to the projector I have always been a fan of RTV silicone. My rationale was that there is not much weight associated with the shroud itself and I was always afraid of an epoxy getting brittle and popping off. That said I have recently started taking to JB KWIK Weld and it works great. A little layer around the inside of the shroud and another on the outside of the projector and then just push em together and let it sit. I haven't had a problem with a projector coming off with either arrangement.

This guy is on the right track. When you go to high beam on the projectors there is no physical change that happens to the bulbs. What I would guess is that the trigger event of the high beams is causing an issue within the relay box and the connection is bugging out. We were having a similar issue with @Kyitty where he would turn the headlights on, they would stay on, and then after a period of 10 seconds to 5 minutes the driver's side light would go out. I believe that he got it figured out and it was a weak connection between the ballast and the harness causing the momentary drop and since there is a guardian built into the ballasts they won't try to turn on again until you cycle the lights. I would dig around on all of your connections and make sure that nothing has come loose, has frayed, etc. Next piece of the puzzle would be to try and swap that motocontrol relay box if you have someone local to who whom you can try it with who has the same generation of harness as you.

    @TacoCat

In my case I had to replace the entire wire harness. No issues since! All the connections felt snug. But something wasn't right. When the light did come on bumps would kill my driver side light - which isn't cool when you wheel your truck!

I'm at full britghtness in... give or take 10 seconds.

Memario was awesome. He happened to be in town and helped me get installed. Unfortunately I had a bad harness out of the box. We spent a lot of time troubleshooting - just didn't have a replacement harness at the time!

LoL Yeah I was really regretting doing HIDs and spending the money that night.

    So glad they work now.

This could be the issue even if the headlights/highs work fine after 3-5+ minutes of the truck being on? It's only happened in the first 3-5 of the truck being on.

I'll check over my connections but just curious why it would only be soon after startup.
