I guess I will go to Autozone and get a 27F whenever the time comes. I'm nearing 40K and I'm not sure if it's just the cold, but it definitely takes an extra second to start the truck when it's anywhere below ~30*

    O. Oops. They don't have a 27f platinum so I got a 24f. Hope that doesn't come back to bite me later.

I think the 27F is only needed if you're doing a lot of towing with electric trailer brakes. Research told me 24F was fine for V6's, even if it came with towing package and 27F.

You're going to want the most capacity with a winch. Tow package or not.

So I know this completely takes all my street cred away automatically by asking this, but apparently I do not know anything about batteries (even though I thought I did). What are you using to judge battery capacity? Cranking amps? Doesn't the fact that it is an AGM battery, and in essence a dual purpose (not a true deep cycle though) make up for some capacity? Or does that not mean anything?

You need reserve capacity (RC) for high amp draw or constant draw equipment. The winches we use have the ability to pull up to 500 amps. The 140 or 160 amp (can't remember which) alternator won't be able to keep up and require battery capacity for those kinds of pulls.

24F has less reserve capacity but more CCA, 27F has more reserve but less CCA...at least, from what I've read.

So it seems 27F (or others with more RC) are best with a winch. My truck started to die when I was doing a particularly hard pull of another Tacoma through a snow drift during this last storm. Repositioned so it wasn't as hard of a line but my lights and truck started to die when it was a pull through ~1.5' of snow.

So I will be heading back to autozone shortly to swap the platinum out for a 27f gold.

That the correct one right? I'm just frustrated and confused now and a little angry with myself.

 Relax my friend. I'm learning about batteries now, I really don't know much. I think the Duralast 27F Gold is the correct one from VatoZone since I don't think they have a 27F Platinum.

That was how mine started. Then it would take two cranks (turns of the key) to start. So its probably due. I got 3.5 years out of the toyota battery.

Found this post from another forum:

Not sure if AGM is needed though because it looks like the 34R has more cranking amps but less reserve than even the 24F.

I've been looking at replacing my stock battery this summer with a 200A alternator and the Interstate 31-agm7 battery. IIRC it has 830 CCA, 190 minutes, and 100 AH, seems like it's the best I've seen since the Sears platinums are discontinued. It's also 6# lighter than the platinum at 69#. Dimensions are similar.

Yep, I'm jealous of you too.

Battery is officially swapped out to a 27f and I got $68 back on the swap. That will go towards my first bottle of welding gas. Of course the way I'm going I will probably buy the wrong kind of gas.
