For a split second, I read that still as an obituary because at a glance when you are scrolling, the phone number looks like a year. I was like, HOLY SHIT!!...the 3rd gen test drive killed this poor bastard and suddenly I felt less upset about the minor issues I've had with mine LOL.

I don't understand this post. You sold your 2014 and are just NOW looking into the 3rd Gen's and discovering they have issues? Do you have a backup plan in case you don't get a 3rd Gen? Sounds like you sold your truck without doing any research on a replacement beforehand.

    I've owned an 03, 05, 09, and 2010 V6 DC Auto PreRunners. I will say I really
enjoyed the torque at launch and manuverabilty of the 2nd Gen.
The shorter snout made me feel that it was just a but more of an agile truck
you can whip around. The transmission was my favorite part of the 2nd Gen.
5 speeds and ready! I do wish they kept the 4.0 5 Speed Auto.

    BUT

Nothing compares to my 17 DC V6 Auto. Sure it feels bulky, sluggish and confused on
gears but its a whole new ball game. New feel, new look, ton of tech
and quiet. I learned to adapt really quick with S mode and or ECT On.
Those little user friendly adjustments make a big difference.
Sounds funny but I wish I had paddle shifting on the wheel.
You wont regret a 17, I hunted (like my gears) for a 15 TRD PRO
but after I sat in the 17 I put my money on it. I haven't had my 1st
service yet and Ill have the TSB Trans update done, but ill say this.

Anything you buy will need some adjusting, and nothing you buy
will be out of the box perfect or as perfect as your 3rd Gen. Look back
at the 2nd Gen threads from 2005 and alot of people kicked themselves
for selling their Gen 1s. But now 10ish years later RAVE about the perfection
of the 3rd Gens. Its best to learn to evolve and trust some automakers
along with help of consumers/fourms to work out the quirks. Just lease a 17 and
if they get it right, buy it , if they don't, turn it in and wait for the next version
meaning a 2019 or so when all the complaints have been heard and rendered.

My 2 cents, best of luck and its reallllly not that bad

Try to test drive the actual truck you want to buy - not the dealer demo. Seems a lot of the issues that are described are to each individual truck..... due to lack of QA/QC?

I've got 20K on my 16. I'm pretty happy with the truck. It does need rpms to make power, but that is just the nature of the design.

I do think some folks just have different or unrealistic expectations of the Tacoma. Some just like to bitch.

Missing My Last Tacoma --- Had 11 Toyota trucks in the past and many other Toyota cars too.
    .
...^^^... Owned maybe 10 or 12 new Toyota pickups and this 2016 is one of the most problem free ... maybe 3rd from the "best ever" on problems.

Transmission is not bad when I leave it in S and use 3, 4 or 5.

Many of the new vehicles with 5 or more gears are having hunting and shifting issues unless it is CVT.

Some on TW have had issues and many have not ... I would buy this truck again in a heartbeat.

FWIW ... my last Gen. 2 TRD OR 4x4 drove me nuts with what seemed to be driveshaft vibration issues and I traded it off on a Honda Ridgeline for that exact reason ... drove the Ridgeline and came back to Toyota.

PS ... My best Toyota truck was maybe a 198? with a single wall bed and a 22R engine.
Guy I sold it to put over 400K on it ... but not as comfortable as my Gen. 3 to drive ... so my Gen. 3 may actually be the best ever ... lol

Those words should never be said on these forums....
