    I haven't had any major issues with my 3rd gen either. Not to get off topic but I have the same tic noise in the same part of the dash! Could you pm me and let me know what you have found out about the fix?

    I see three factors in this trend toward more and more "gears" in automatics:
    • First and foremost it provides marketing hype;
    • Improved EPA fuel economy specs for added marketing hype and improved CAFE compliance (= lower fines and/or CAFE "credits");
    • More marketing hype;
    Oh, did I mention marketing hype?

    I see the gate on the new model is still alive and kicking lol. Personally don't mind either, love my second gen almost own it lol. Toyota didn't buy into the more more more of everything hence the Atkinson cycle motor. My thinking why, many of you out there and others have shown that more isn't always better. It will be interesting to see how this model is going in 10 years. Check out the info, plenty here to make an informed decision with and go from there.

    Had my '16 for almost a year now. For the first 1200 mi, the transmission will hunt and peck until it 'learns' your driving style. Best tip I learned to avoid it was to use the ETC Power button. Electronic Throttle Control, I believe - and it makes the accelerator more responsive and the tranny hold on to gears longer between shifts. My daily routine is to keep ETC off on main roads and streets and to pop the button and stomp on it on the highways.

    I'll just leave this 2016 torque curve here (I dont know why they chose speed instead of RPM though).

    And here is a comparison to the 2015 (in red):

    I think there is a lot more work that needs to be done apart from putting your foot into it....

    What is the green line that's so up and down? They both look the same color.

    With autos that cannot be locked in 4th (or whatever gear is 1:1 or close) it's common to plot HP & torque vs. speed--HP/torque vs rpm would be all over the place. The Ford EECV system could be locked in 4th via the tune; don't know (yet) if the 2nd gen Taco can be so locked...

    Like above never seen anyone shifting gears on a dyno. I bet 500$ the gen2 graph is a pull with the tranny in 1.1 and the gen 3 changing gears. That's not even a fair comparison

    I've got about 2k on my 2017 TRD OR AC 6speed. No problems at all. Love the truck. Around town I drive with the ECT button on. On the highway I turn it off. Take it for a test drive! If you buy one please don't complain that it doesn't have enough power. I have simpathy for the people that are having problems but I don't understand those that buy one then complain it doesn't have enough power? It has way more than my 1986 4cyl did and way less than my 2014 Tundra 5.7 did but it is what it is. IMO, you can never have enough power!
    Good luck with whatever you decide.

    Trapper, i know if you buy the 2017 you'll love it as much as your 2014. I've had my 2016 TRD Sport DCSB for 7 months and 5000 carefree miles. The tranny learns your driving habits and adjust to the way you drive. I had a 1st Gen, 2000 i bought it from a friend with 167,000 miles, it was a TRD SR5 extended cab loaded with all the options available at the time. I only had the truck for 8 months, it was one that got included in the frame rot issue, I bought the truck in 2009, Toyota bought it back from me in 2009 for $12,997. 50. I've had a couple cars since then but always wanted another Tacoma, i had a 2013 Subaru, in my opinion that was the best car i ever owned and i think Subaru is the best, safest car on the road today just wish they made a pick up truck. Toyota stands behind their products and they make a safe, reliable, and in most cases trouble free truck. I can say this truck rides better then most cars, its quite inside, as a matter of fact i was a passenger in the back seat of my friends 2016 Lexus LX450, very nice SUV, but the Tacoma is actually quieter inside and as for the ride, I think it rides smoother and more comfortable then the majority of cars i've driven or ridden in. I checked on the 2016 Ford F150 4X4, the price for a comparable truck from Ford, 45K. If you're worried about the transmission, engine or the performance just remember it isn't a performance car or a sports car, its a truck, a nice truck but still a truck and Toyota is a time proven auto manufacture. Another friend of mine just traded in his 2012 Tacoma Sport on a 2017, the dealer gave him $23,500.00 for a truck he bought new for $30,000.00. In my opinion the 3rd generation is on the money, i like the fact that its bigger with much more room inside. The radio, navigation and the entunes all work great, the AC will freeze you out and the heater will have you wearing shorts through a northeast winter. Just remember if its a Tacoma you want, don't settle for something else because you'll find every little thing wrong with it and it will be the worst truck you ever bought and if its a 2015 that fits your life style then find one and pick it up. Just my 2 cents, I think you'll really like the 2017 if you give it a shot.
    Good luck SGM Moose

    I went old school 4.7 V8. 4.0 struggled towing, for sure the 3.5 will. I stuck with Toyota. The 4.7 is a good motor, have to do the secondary AIP bypass. Strong tower, good torque, sweet engine. 4.6 would be nice to have.
