Serious question, forgive my ignorance. Why would one need this, exactly? Update to roads or software?

It's a map (roads, etc.) update if you have the Entune Navigation system. Toyota usually comes out with a new map update once a year and will cost ~$170 at the dealer.

When you’re using your nav and you come across a dead end road that it’s taken you down. With as much construction that goes on yearly it needs updates. My 4Runner is a year old and already I’ve come across at least 1/2 dozen instances where construction has completely changed the roads or layout of interchanges.

If you have a 2018 Tacoma with Navigation you should already have this or a more recent update. Easiest way to check is to remove your SD Card and check the number on the back, if you have 0E184 or 0E185 then you won't need this update. This update should help those with a 2016 or older Tacoma and the (0E183 or lower) SD Card.

Not to my knowledge, Toyota uses some type of security that requires their SD card. This was discussed on a thread in the 3rd Gen forum, several tried it but with no success.

No, IIRC that can't be done without some CID/serial number manipulation per here.

I'm running 0E185. Thanks for the heads up.

    Also hypothetically asking...
Can you update then remove the sd card and resell it? Ya know, pass it around?

No, the SD Card needs to be installed for Navigation to work.

Any version description online that lists the changes between files? Wonder if there are certain regions that would benefit from this than others.

I've never seen anything that shows what the changes are from one map update to the next, probably too numerous to list. I've had stand alone Navigation units (TomTom, Garmin) and don't recall them listing the changes in their updates either.
