    I guess one is supposed to take their leaf pack apart and put these strips in between before re-assembly... wouldn't the leaves just wear through this lining pretty quick at which point the squeaking would return?

    You are correct, the leaf pack gets taken apart and the liners are placed in-between the individual leafs. Usually in between the top 3 leafs does the trick. The overload leafs don't usually squeek because they don't flex as much as the top 3. And no the leafs don't wear through the lining that quickly because they flex along with the leafs, there isn't any rubbing or anything. I mean after several years you may want to think about replacing them.
