I bought my 2010 Tacoma Pre-Runner in May with 56K from Carmax and have only put 4K miles driving back east. I experienced some low-idle/shakiness when I would bring it to a stop and I also noticed some lurching from a stop to first gear. Today as I drove it to the dealer for some warranty maintenance for the seatbelt it would not shift into 5th gear and was revving up to 4500RPMs.
The idle issue was chalked up to be spark plug/engine misfire- not a bid deal. However, the mechanic said it returned two error codes (PO776, P2714) for a Solenoids B and D were Bad/Sticking/Off? He reported that replacing the solenoids would not solve the problem because of debris floating around in the fluid, and that replacing the fluid and solenoids would not solve it either. At the end of the day he told me I need a new transmission?

I have to ask, am I getting screwed? Its a Toyota with 60K miles, these trucks roll around for 200K. Is there something I should do first or did I buy a lemon.

I had the same issue on my Frontier. My neighbor has owned an import auto shop since 1978 (good neighbor to have) we flushed my transmission and changed out the filter and whatnot....Ordered the wrong solenoid so...flushed the transmission again. Then ordered the right solenoid and swapped it out. I never got the CEL to turn off. Unfortunately, I blew the head gasket before I ever got it resolved. I've read several places that you can't get that error to correct. Hopefully someone else here has an answer better than my experience.

I don't have any lights on the dash appear, but the lurchiness seems to be typical from what I read around TacomaWorld. I am wondering if getting new solenoids or just flushing the transmission fluid like you did will solve the problem. Also, on the way home from the dealer the truck drove just fine (figures). I am going to take it to another dealer and have them diagnose the problem. I think its too easy to suggest to an owner who has just passed the warranty to replace their transmission.

Doh, looks like I made the classic error of draining the ATF fluid instead of the oil. I added more oil and have driven a while with this situation. I hope I didn't screw things up too bad. Im going to have the oil drained and the ATF fluid refilled. If I am experiencing this error code from the Solenoids am I totally F****d?

Yeah Im reading that with the transmission pan drained I should NOT drive, but I have driven a couple hundred miles. If the mechanic is saying I need a new transmission, is topping the level off going to make a difference?

Are you really saying you drove with the tranny drained?

Wait, you're driving around approximately 3-4 qts low on ATF?

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I think you should find another transmission.

Can you shift in and out of gear still?

It performs pretty normally, only had one issue today where it wouldn't shift into fifth. No lights on dash, just two solenoids sending error codes.

    :bananadead:

Do not turn your truck back on, back away slowly, call a transmission shop and explain how long you have been driving without fluid in the pan.

I think I've driven a couple hundred miles, what is the extent of damage I could have done?

Toast the tranny. I'm surprised it didn't act up with that little fluid in it.

I'm not going to speculate on how much damage has been done, get a pro to come out and look at it, if you are lucky the damage will be limited to a solenoid or two.

The reason I say don't turn the truck back on: circulation, you don't need the pump circulating any more air than it already has.

Pardon, but what pump is circulating air and what is it damaging?
