Kinda depends on what you are into and purpose. I agree that the tacoma with long travel and longer leafs or a linked rear would absolutely destroy the desert, its not really my cup o tea as I like it slow and in the big dry rocks. I live way too far for desert hooning territory lol. If hes asking about a SAS hes not looking for desert high speed wheelin though. Solid axle in high speed desert runs is as garbage as IFS in the rocks

If you wanted to keep it toyota you could separate the knuckle balls from the axle tubes, flip the housing and reweld the balls. Or go wiht a diamond or ruffstuff housing. Both great options. I prefer yota axles to Dana axles, even though the 60 is stronger, a 3rd gen taco on a fj80 axle with chromolly shafts and reverse cut Hi pinion gears is stronger than youll ever need!

I have a trip to Afghan coming up, but I'm going to give an SAS some serious thought before I return.

Unless you're getting one-ton axles it really just seems like a step backwards.

Save yourself the trouble... buy a truck with a solid axle already, whether it be already swapped or a 1983-1985 pickup. 84-85 4runner. Fj40, 60, or 80.

This is the correct answer. Get a triple locked 80. Armor it up. Throw a 4 inch slinky lift on it, 4.88s, 37s, and you will be able to hit every crawler trail outside of buggy trails. My old 80 was the bees knees. Shouldnt have let that one go

Why don’t you do one better... and do a TTB swap. That way you won’t be flopping around like a walrus on land if you drive over 5 mph

I'm sure it is. It's stressful even thinking about it, but that's part of the journey. Having something that nobody else has is one reason I want to tackle it. I mean, yes, Spartan did it, but it's not my flavor.

I think there are about 3 solid axle 3rd gen tacomas out there right now. It really comes down to how much its going to cost vs what you are going to get out of it. You could spend the same $$ or even less and get a MUCH more capable crawler than the tacoma can be. So youll have this tacoma that you dumped all this money into, scared to beat up the body panels on the trail, and getting whooped up on by 30 year old toyotas on every trail

The other thing is that there are no kits out besides the rockslayer 4 link kit. I personally dont think the 4 link kit can really run with tires smaller than 38s or so. Its the only front 4 link kit I have ever seen. everyone else does 3 link and panhard bar up front.

So if you SAS your Tacoma... youre looking at a $30K kit or doing it all from scratch. Then trying to get your ABS to work, your electronics, youll lose all crawl control and multi terrain select. Youll have to figure out the automatic locking hubs... etc

I'd be working on it from scratch. My friend is a pretty mechanically sound and I'll have access to a machine shop/waterjet to cut whats needed. I'm also right down the street from ADS and would like to work something out with them. Haven't used crawl control so that I'm not worried about. It's not impossible, and probably not worth it (read not worth it), but I would think most project builds aren't. Like I said, it's still a thought, but a serious thought. I have 9 months to think about it pending I don't catch a mortar to the face.
