alove's build got me thinking about what I want to do with the SAS route. I blame him. :D

Thought I might start to collect parts soon. I've been wanting to go D60/14B but if I keep it a DD for I don't know how long, I think I might stick with a D44 and not upgrade to a D60 and do anything too crazy/stupid with it until I have another Taco for a DD.

What's a good rear axle to match to the D44? Or can I just use what I have? (Which would be nice since it would already be geared/locked.) Or should I go with a Toyota front axle? Which front axle options have 5.29s available?

Stock Toyota axles have the pumpkin on the wrong side. Unless your willing to make it work by flipping it, and the tsteering knuckles.

There are literally hundreds of swapped tacos running stock rear axles. The stock rear axle can really only handle 37's, depending on your driving driving style. If you are going with a 44 up front, the 8" should be fine out back.

If you aren't going to run anything larger than a 35-37 I would definitely say keep it Toyota, but I'm bias to that

The case swap isn't bad and it has a lot of good incentives to do it, but in hind sight (if you do it) I wish I had done dual cases. The 4.7's are great, but there's no in between gear. I have to either go in 2wd/4wd high or really slow.

Also for what it's worth, two of my buddies with crawlers (84 and 85) are still running the stock axles. The only upgrades to them are 5.29's, chromolly front and rear and I think the 85 has the new chromo hub gears. The white 85 runs 42in swampers and the black 84 is on 38 or 39's. Both of them will do some work and aren't afraid to push their rigs and they have never busted anything up. They both also pull them back to back on concrete against 1/2 ton trucks, so they put some strain on them

A rear Toyota axle is actually stronger than a stock Dana 44 so if your going to go Dana 44 just keep the stock Toyota axle. Save your money for some proper axle's ( 60's or better of course ) and then you can not only have a daily driver, but a daily driver you can drive to the trail, have fun and then drive to work on Monday.

This is a truck That Dan and I built. It's an 02 with dual case's with 4.7 gears in the front case, 36" Iroks and it runs a bone stock Dana 44 in the front and a marlin built stock locked Tacoma axle in the rear. He has never broken down except when he followed me over and obsatcle and crushed his drive shaft but was still able to drive home.

muhahahahaha just got my Ford Hi pin 60 and a chevy 14 bolt!!!

what have I got myself into :p, the more advice the better been reading all week

my goal is 3 link front, leaf rear

located a good shackle flip already, i understand ill need to modify to my need though
going to try and get my t-case ordered this month, and my marlin crawl box :D
not decided on coilovers yet, but ill order them in the cold months, its going to be one hell of a year, was hoping to do it over a year, but maybe ill have to aim for May long of next year :D

well see though, one thing though, im going to keep a strict parts list together, instead of most the second gen builds where you have to kind of guess what everyone used

Yeah, I have every part/item I have purchased since thinking about SAS and beyond to this day in an excel file... with pricing and location of where I bought it.

BTW the total pricing is really far down the list so I don't have to see the total :anonymous:

I still like the idea of using a D60, but aren't they ridiculously wide compared to the D44? Would be kind of awkward as a DD. Or do they come in different lengths?

Outside to outside, I'm at 75" right now. I would think anything over 80" seems a bit much on a DD SAS...

just a quick inspection of the dana 60 bible on pirate they say my axle is 69.25" width, so I think by calculation im expecting outside to outside width of around 80 to 85, I wont mind the wider track, as I'll be slightly higher than where I'm at, im trying to get her low, but even with a 3 link they get big quick

I believe you mean "narrow". Narrowing an axle changes its WMS/WMS width.

Shave refers to additional ground clearance by modifying the differential housing and/or ring gear outside diameter.

    "Shaved 14 bolt housing"

    14b_36b8f95aaed479638b5816233b528a2934000d18.jpg

You can see where material was removed from the underside of the housing. Typically the outside diameter of the ring gear is reduced slightly to once again fit inside this housing with minimal effect of strength.
