I think you mean 35's. I did a few 4 wheel burnouts on some obstacles in Moab on 33's and my CV's handle it just fine. Hell a lot of guys on 35's rarely break CV's. Above 35's is where you really start seeing 2nd gens break CV's though...
n0rth does pretty good with his 36's, but he babies that thing when the front locker is on. Meanwhile I was all over the throttle trying to break one with my front locker in Moab this year and never managed too.

I've felt like the 2nd gen front end is about on par with a Dana 44. I've been with guys who have broke Dana 30's and 44's on 33's trying to do things that I have managed to do just fine.

For the cost of a d44 and chromos, you could have a 60 under your truck. And you wouldn't have to worry about the weak ass balljoints and tiny shafts.

Possibly... It's hard to compare really, I was just trying to get my point across. I think the Cvs are strong going straight, but get them all the way turned and I don't think the strength follows as much as the solid axle. I do 4 wheel burnouts all the time on every single obstacle with my foot to the floor for MINUTES sometimes... I've watched 2nd gens wheel on 33s and 35s and 37s... Just the other day I was wheeling with a 2nd gen on 35s and he babied the truck. He could have made more obstacles if he used the skinny pedal but he said after changing over 8 CVs he just does not want to beat on it anymore. I watched a 2nd gen break several CVs on 35s with LONG travel. It all depends how you wheel.

Everyone bitches how shitty the D44 is on the 1st gens too, but mine has held up pretty well. Although, it's fully chromo. I have broken the front locker which ruined the gears. And when I first broke my axle shafts it was due to improper installation of the u-joints... I don't think I'd ever of broken a part if I used an ARB locker and didn't have a retard install my u-joints.

Yeah I'm sure that CV's definitely end up weaker when you have them at full lock and droop/stuff... and ultimately IFS doesn't flex nearly as good as a solid axle can.

D44 under a second gen is just plain silly.

2nd gen CV's are the shit, not even close to a SAC, but a metric shit-ton stronger than first gen.

I never broke a CV until 37's, that was locked up front all the time too.

Now, I can roast the 40's, take hills semi-rock-bouncer style, and never so much a blink an eye worrying about a breakage.

    :D

oh I know. I was just saying that I just got used to snapping them like toothpicks and replacing them. I could do it in less than 30Min in the freezing cold with no help..

Actually I almost swapped in a 2nd gen front clam and did long tavel with some CRV shafts but I already had the D60/14bolt axles and I knew I would still be limited to a 38" tire and I want 42-44's

Hell... I still don't think IFS would last on 38s, unless you go shannon style... 35s at best. SFAFTMFW :D

other than snapping shafts all the time and bending my DB lift a few times I thought it held up great on 35's but that could have been reinforced and made better. I still think it's possible with second gen axles and gears but SFAFTMFW :cheers:

side note my 5.38 spicer gears and set up kit showed up today. Still waiting on my ARB (2piece design).

Once I get that stuff in then I just need to get some Air bumps, lower the front an inch and go wheeling. Who did you guys get your air bumps from??

Username has been doing pretty well CV-wise with 37's on his LT rig. He kept blowing up rear ring and pinions though, so he just threw an LC 9.5" axle under the rear.

I still think its possible to run 38 skinnies under a first gen with RCV axles and a second gen front diff for rock crawling but SFA is the way to go.

He does more than just that, but realistically, nobody is taking IFS Tacomas through obstacles that start pushing well built SFA rigs hard. haha

    Monte sure wants to.

there are a few guy In the toyaholics that are doing it it without the second gen front diff just long travel with RCV axles and 38's claiming they are kicking trucks with Toyota SFA's ass's. but hey that's just their word.
