Why not weld to the cast? That's what I did.

not to mention that you need to use ni-rod and preheat the cast to make a good strong weld

Isn't ni-rod only for cast iron?

No one wants ugly welds... you just get flamed for it. :luvya: The strength difference is marginal. There's much to debate on it...

Guess you have never welded with co2 and Flux then. Lays down just like solid with 75/25 mig mix but burns in way hotter with the same power. Only thing you have to do is chip off a little layer of the Flux stuff after your done.

Nope, if you have flux you might as well use it and learn with it. Get c02 and do it that way. If you don't like it just switch to mig wire and you can still use the c02 to weld with it. Works great too.

I use solid and mig mix but a friend of mine work at an big fab shop and they all use Flux and co2 for the extra strength. They seem to think it's worth it. They also use t100 plate for everything though lol.

What did you use to weld it? Any special rod? preheat and post heat? Temps? and was your diff nodular iron or cast steel? I can't figure out what mine is so I guess I'll have to do a spark test. I am pretty sure its nodular iron according to some posts online.

Avoiding getting flamed by webwheelers is the goal. If you have 110 its not even worth your time fucking around with gas, just get flux core and go to town at least it will stay together. On a 220 machine, I don't know why you would be messing around with flux core.

Depends on how big your machine is and how thick your welding. I would have loved some Flux and co2 a few weeks ago when welding out some 3/8ths at work with our miller 180.

That's when you break out the stick welder.

What's my psc single ended ram worth? I think it's an 8" stroke. I may swap to a double ended since all I would have to go is swap the rams out and weld up the steering links.

I don't see any problem with unshielded flux welding, just have to brush off the flux before you paint and it can still be pretty. I actually just took my hobart 140 to flux from mig because I got tired of the wind blowing away the shielding gas anytime I was welding near the open garage door

I have friends that weld for a living as long as you don't over heat one area of the cast then you can use Ni rod to weld steel to cast and you can do it without heading up the housing to 500+ degrees just by jumping around and doing short welds also giving it time to cool, it's how I did mine the first time I did the 3 link worked fine.

I seriously think I am just going to build a minitruss. Just do not want to trust that old shitty center section being welded. maybe if I had the proper rod and a stick welder and someone that knew how to weld to nodular iron.

Similar to this one as I posted earlier.
